The Goat That Took the Hat

Fabian helped at a small farm for children every Saturday. He fed the rabbits, cleaned the barn and answered questions. One sunny morning, he wore his favorite green hat. His grandfather gave it to him.

Fabian ayudaba todos los sábados en una pequeña granja para niños. Daba de comer a los conejos, limpiaba el establo y respondía preguntas. Una mañana soleada, llevaba puesto su sombrero verde favorito. Se lo había regalado su abuelo.

About twenty children came to the farm that day. Fabian bent down to fill a water bucket. A brown goat walked up behind him. It took the hat in its mouth and ran across the field.

Ese día llegaron a la granja unos veinte niños. Fabian se agachó para llenar un balde de agua. Una cabra café se acercó por detrás. Tomó el sombrero con la boca y corrió por el campo.

"Hey!" shouted Fabian. "That's my hat!"

«¡Oye!», gritó Fabian. «¡Ese es mi sombrero!».

He ran after the goat. The goat ran around the big tree. It ran around the pig house. It ran through the group of children. The children laughed and shouted. Some cheered for Fabian, and some cheered for the goat.

Corrió tras la cabra. La cabra dio la vuelta al árbol grande. Dio la vuelta a la casa de los cerdos. Pasó corriendo entre el grupo de niños. Los niños reían y gritaban. Algunos animaban a Fabian, y otros animaban a la cabra.

Fabian tripped on a bucket and fell into the straw. He sat there and tried to breathe. The goat stood far away and chewed the hat.

Then Fabian had an idea. He took a carrot from the rabbit food in his pocket. He sat on the grass and held it out. He did not move.

The goat stopped. It looked at the carrot, and it looked at Fabian. Then it walked slowly to him. It dropped the hat and took the carrot.

La cabra se detuvo. Miró la zanahoria, y miró a Fabian. Luego caminó despacio hacia él. Soltó el sombrero y tomó la zanahoria.

Fabian picked up the hat. There was a big hole in the top.

"It looks terrible," said a small boy.

"It looks fine," said Fabian. He put it on anyway. Some of his hair came out of the hole. Then he went back to the rabbits.
