The Detour Through the Orchard

Hiro and Leila hike the same trail every month. They know each rock and every turn well. Today, a sign blocks their usual path. It says, "Trail Closed. Please Use Detour."

Hiro y Leila caminan por el mismo sendero cada mes. Conocen cada roca y cada curva muy bien. Hoy, un letrero bloquea su camino habitual. Dice: «Sendero cerrado. Use el desvío».

The detour arrow points through a large orchard. Hiro and Leila look at each other, surprised. "I did not know an orchard was here," Leila says.

La flecha del desvío señala hacia un huerto grande. Hiro y Leila se miran, sorprendidos. «No sabía que había un huerto aquí», dice Leila.

They walk between rows of apple trees. Red apples hang low on every branch. The air smells sweet and a little dusty.

Caminan entre hileras de manzanos. Manzanas rojas cuelgan bajo en cada rama. El aire huele dulce y un poco polvoriento.

A man walks toward them with a basket. "Hello there," he says. "I am Gareth." "This is my family's orchard," he explains.

Un hombre camina hacia ellos con una canasta. «Hola», dice. «Soy Gareth». «Este es el huerto de mi familia», explica.

"We are just using the trail detour," Hiro says. "You picked a good day," Gareth says, smiling. "Today, we pick apples for the market."

«Solo estamos usando el desvío del sendero», dice Hiro. «Escogiste un buen día», dice Gareth, sonriendo. «Hoy recogemos manzanas para el mercado».

Gareth hands them each a small basket. "Would you like to help today?" he asks.

Gareth les da a cada uno una canasta pequeña. «¿Les gustaría ayudar hoy?» pregunta.

Leila and Hiro look at each other and grin. "We would love to help," Leila says.

Leila y Hiro se miran y sonríen. «Nos encantaría ayudar», dice Leila.

They spend an hour picking ripe apples. Gareth shows them which apples to pick.

Pasan una hora recogiendo manzanas maduras. Gareth les muestra cuáles manzanas recoger.

At the end, Gareth gives them a small bag. "Take some apples home with you," he says.

Al final, Gareth les da una bolsa pequeña. «Llévense algunas manzanas a casa», dice.

Hiro and Leila thank him and wave goodbye. They walk back to find the main trail. Two bags of apples swing at their sides. Leila bites into a red apple right away. "This is our new favorite trail," she says.

Hiro y Leila le dan las gracias y se despiden con la mano. Caminan de regreso para encontrar el sendero principal. Dos bolsas de manzanas se mecen a sus lados. Leila muerde una manzana roja de inmediato. «Este es nuestro nuevo sendero favorito», dice ella.
