The Waiting Room

Nadia had been in the imaging room for forty minutes. That left Felix alone with a waiting-room chair, a muted television running a home-renovation show neither of them would ever watch, and roughly two years of things he had never gotten around to saying. They had been together long enough that "together" had started to feel like an insufficient word for it. They had also been together short enough, apparently, that he had convinced himself there was no urgency in finding a better one.

The referral had used the phrase "just to rule things out," which he understood, intellectually, to be the reassuring version of the sentence. It hadn't stopped him from spending the drive over doing the specific, useless arithmetic of a person imagining a future collapsing before there was any evidence it needed to.

O encaminhamento médico tinha usado a frase "só para descartar possibilidades", o que ele entendia, racionalmente, ser a versão tranquilizadora da frase. What struck him most, sitting there, was not fear exactly — it was the sudden, unwelcome clarity of realizing how much he had been treating their relationship as a draft. Somewhere in the last two years he had begun thinking of the conversation about moving in together as a thing to have eventually. It would happen once his lease ended, once work settled down, once some vague and endlessly renewable "once" had finally arrived. Had he actually believed they had unlimited time, he supposed that postponing might have made some sense. Sitting in a plastic chair under fluorescent light, he no longer believed anything of the kind. Not once, in two years, had he actually said any of this to her plainly.

O que mais o impressionou, sentado ali, não foi exatamente o medo — foi a clareza repentina e indesejada de perceber o quanto ele vinha tratando o relacionamento deles como um rascunho. Em algum momento dos últimos dois anos, ele tinha começado a pensar na conversa sobre morar juntos como algo para acontecer eventualmente. Aconteceria assim que o contrato de aluguel dele terminasse, assim que o trabalho se estabilizasse, assim que algum vago e infinitamente renovável "assim que" finalmente chegasse. Se ele realmente tivesse acreditado que tinham tempo ilimitado, ele supunha que adiar as coisas até faria algum sentido. Sentado em uma cadeira de plástico sob luz fluorescente, ele já não acreditava em nada disso. Nem uma vez, em dois anos, ele realmente tinha dito nada disso a ela com todas as letras.

She came out paler than she'd gone in, though she managed a small, tired smile before he could ask. "They want a follow-up scan next week. Probably nothing. The doctor used the word 'probably' four separate times, which either means she's very confident or very careful."

Ela saiu mais pálida do que tinha entrado, embora tenha conseguido um sorriso pequeno e cansado antes que ele pudesse perguntar. "Eles querem um exame de acompanhamento semana que vem. Provavelmente não é nada. A médica usou a palavra 'provavelmente' quatro vezes, o que ou significa que ela está muito confiante, ou muito cautelosa."

"Which do you think it is?"

"Qual você acha que é?"

"I think it's a doctor covering herself. I try not to read too much into doctors' adverbs."

"Acho que é uma médica se protegendo. Eu tento não ler demais nos advérbios dos médicos."

He laughed, more from relief at her voice sounding like her own than at the joke itself. Then, before he could wait for a better moment — a nicer restaurant, a calmer week, some more cinematic version of this exact sentence — he said the thing he'd been rehearsing for two years.

Ele riu, mais aliviado por ouvir a voz dela soando como a dela mesma do que pela piada em si. Então, antes que pudesse esperar por um momento melhor — um restaurante mais bonito, uma semana mais calma, alguma versão mais cinematográfica exatamente dessa frase — ele disse o que vinha ensaiando havia dois anos.

"I want us to actually live together. Not eventually. Not once my lease ends. I don't want to keep treating this like something we're still deciding on."

"Eu quero que a gente realmente more junto. Não eventualmente. Não assim que meu contrato de aluguel terminar. Eu não quero continuar tratando isso como algo que ainda estamos decidindo."

Nadia looked at him for a long moment, in a waiting room that was, by any reasonable standard, an almost comically unromantic place to say something like that. "You're doing this now? In a room that smells like hand sanitizer?"

Nadia olhou para ele por um longo momento, em uma sala de espera que, por qualquer padrão razoável, era um lugar quase comicamente nada romântico para dizer algo assim. "Você está fazendo isso agora? Numa sala que cheira a álcool em gel?"

"I don't think I trusted myself to do it anywhere nicer. I'd have found a reason to wait."

"Acho que eu não confiava em mim mesmo para fazer isso em um lugar mais bonito. Eu teria arranjado uma desculpa para esperar."

"Ask me again next week," she said, "once we actually know something." Then, quieter: "But don't wait longer than that."

"Pergunte de novo semana que vem", ela disse, "quando a gente realmente souber de alguma coisa." Depois, mais baixo: "Mas não espere mais do que isso."
