The Relocation Clause

Paloma had read the offer letter four times before showing it to Victor. It wasn't because the terms were unclear, but because she already knew, with a certainty that unsettled her, exactly what his face would do when he reached the third paragraph. That was the one specifying a start date in the regional office, six hundred miles from the apartment they'd shared for three years and the job he'd built, slowly and deliberately, in this city.

"It's a director title," she said, sliding the letter across the table rather than simply telling him. "I wasn't expecting them to offer it. I don't think I can turn it down without wondering, for years, what I gave up."

"É um cargo de diretora", ela disse, deslizando a carta pela mesa em vez de simplesmente contar a ele. "Eu não esperava que fossem me oferecer isso. Acho que não consigo recusar sem ficar anos me perguntando o que abri mão."

He read it in silence, longer than the letter actually required, which she recognized as a stalling technique she'd used on him more than once herself. "Congratulations," he said finally, and meant it, which somehow made the rest of the conversation harder rather than easier.

What neither of them said immediately was that this was the second time in four years one of them had been asked to uproot a life for the other's career. Both were clearly thinking it. The first time, Victor's transfer, had cost Paloma a research position she'd never quite replaced with anything she loved as much. She had not brought it up in four years. She was fairly sure, watching him fold the letter carefully along its existing creases, that he was thinking about it now anyway.

"I'm not asking you to do what I did," she said. "I know what it cost you last time, even though you never said so directly."

"Não estou pedindo que você faça o que eu fiz", ela disse. "Eu sei o quanto isso te custou da última vez, mesmo que você nunca tenha dito isso diretamente."

"I never said so because I didn't want it counted against you. It wasn't a debt. It was a choice I made."

"Eu nunca disse isso porque não queria que fosse contado contra você. Não era uma dívida. Foi uma escolha que eu fiz."

"It's starting to sound like a debt now."

"Está começando a soar como uma dívida agora."

Rarely had four years of careful silence unraveled so quickly over one paragraph of an offer letter.

Raramente quatro anos de silêncio cuidadoso se desfizeram tão rápido por causa de um único parágrafo de uma carta de proposta.

Had she never brought up the earlier move at all, she suspected they'd be having an entirely different, more practical conversation right now — logistics, timelines, whether his job could go remote. Instead they were having the conversation underneath that one, the one about whether love that keeps asking one person to be the one who moves is still, in any meaningful sense, an equal arrangement.

Se ela nunca tivesse mencionado aquela mudança anterior, ela suspeitava que os dois estariam tendo uma conversa completamente diferente e mais prática agora — logística, prazos, se o emprego dele poderia virar remoto. Victor was quiet for a long moment. "I don't actually know if I can do it again," he said. "Not won't. Can't, honestly — my parents, my job, four years of a life I like living here. I need you to hear the difference."

"Neither do I," Paloma admitted, which was, oddly, the most honest thing either of them had said all evening. Neither offer nor apartment nor city got resolved that night. What they agreed to instead, quietly, over cold tea neither of them finished, was to stop pretending the imbalance from four years ago had simply disappeared just because nobody had mentioned it since.
