The Snow Day Walk

Cato wakes up and looks out of the window. Snow is everywhere. The street is white and quiet.

Cato acorda e olha pela janela. Há neve por todo lado. A rua está branca e silenciosa.

He puts on his coat, his hat, and big boots. He takes his bag and leaves the house.

Ele veste o casaco, o gorro e botas grandes. Pega a mochila e sai de casa.

The walk to school is slow. The snow comes up to his knees. He falls once, and he laughs.

A caminhada até a escola é lenta. A neve chega aos joelhos dele. Ele cai uma vez e ri.

There are no cars on the road. There are no children. Cato thinks, "Maybe they are all late."

Não há carros na rua. Não há crianças. Cato pensa: "Talvez todos estejam atrasados."

At school, the doors are shut. The yard is empty. Cato looks at the windows. They are dark.

Na escola, as portas estão fechadas. O pátio está vazio. Cato olha para as janelas. Elas estão escuras.

A teacher stands by the front door. She has a big shovel. She moves the snow away from the steps.

Uma professora está parada junto à porta da frente. Ela tem uma pá grande. Ela tira a neve dos degraus.

"Cato!" she says. "Why are you here?" "It is Monday," he says. "I have school."

"Cato!", diz ela. "Por que você está aqui?" "É segunda-feira", diz ele. "Eu tenho aula."

She laughs. "The school is closed today. There is too much snow. Did you not read the message?"

Ela ri. "A escola está fechada hoje. Há neve demais. Você não leu a mensagem?"

Cato takes out his phone. There is one new message from last night. It says, "School closed." His face turns red.

Cato pega o celular. Há uma mensagem nova de ontem à noite. Ela diz: "Escola fechada." O rosto dele fica vermelho.

The teacher points to a second shovel by the wall. Cato takes it. He starts to push the snow.

A professora aponta para uma segunda pá junto à parede. Cato a pega. Ele começa a empurrar a neve.
