Wim started work at nine. His phone buzzed on the desk. He read the message.
Wim começou a trabalhar às nove. O celular dele vibrou na mesa. Ele leu a mensagem.
"I am thirsty." The number was new. Wim did not know it. He put the phone away.
"Estou com sede." O número era novo. Wim não o conhecia. Ele guardou o celular.
At ten, another message came. "Please, some water." Wim frowned. Who wrote this?
Às dez, chegou outra mensagem. "Por favor, um pouco de água." Wim franziu a testa. Quem escrevia aquilo?
At lunch, he told his coworker about the texts. "Very funny," Wim said to her. She laughed and shook her head. "It is not me," she said.
No almoço, ele contou à colega sobre as mensagens. "Muito engraçado", disse Wim a ela. Ela riu e balançou a cabeça. "Não sou eu", disse ela.
Wim did not believe her. He looked around the office. Everybody looked at their screens.
Wim não acreditou nela. Ele olhou ao redor do escritório. Todos olhavam para suas telas.
At two, he stood by the window. His phone buzzed again. "I am very dry," said the message.
Às duas, ele estava em pé perto da janela. O celular vibrou de novo. "Estou muito seca", dizia a mensagem.
Wim looked down. A big green plant sat next to him. A small white box sat in its pot. A tiny light blinked on the box.
Wim olhou para baixo. Uma planta grande e verde estava ao lado dele. Uma pequena caixa branca estava no vaso. Uma luzinha piscava na caixa.
He read the words on the box. "Plant sensor. When the plant is dry, it sends a text." The phone number on the box was his. Someone made a mistake.
Ele leu as palavras na caixa. "Sensor de planta. Quando a planta está seca, ele envia uma mensagem." O número de telefone na caixa era o dele. Alguém tinha cometido um erro.
Wim took a cup to the kitchen. He filled it with water. He gave the plant a long drink.
Wim levou um copo até a cozinha. Encheu-o de água. Deu à planta um longo gole.
A minute later, his phone buzzed. "Thank you," said the message.
Um minuto depois, o celular dele vibrou. "Obrigada", dizia a mensagem.
