The Piano That Played at Night

Valentina cleans the community center every night after it closes. She locks the doors and turns off most of the lights. One night, she hears piano music from the music room. The door to that room is always locked.

Valentina limpa o centro comunitário toda noite depois que ele fecha. Ela tranca as portas e apaga a maioria das luzes. Numa noite, ela ouve música de piano vindo da sala de música. A porta daquela sala está sempre trancada.

Valentina stops and listens carefully. The music continues, soft and slow. She walks toward the music room door. To her surprise, the door stands open just a little.

Valentina para e escuta com atenção. A música continua, suave e lenta. Ela caminha em direção à porta da sala de música. Para sua surpresa, a porta está entreaberta.

She pushes the door open and looks inside. No one sits at the old piano in the corner. But the keys move up and down by themselves. Valentina takes a step back, a little worried.

Ela empurra a porta e olha para dentro. Ninguém está sentado ao piano velho no canto. Mas as teclas se movem para cima e para baixo sozinhas. Valentina dá um passo para trás, um pouco preocupada.

Then she looks carefully at the piano. A large paper roll turns slowly inside it. The keys move with the paper as it turns. Valentina remembers this piano now.

Então ela observa o piano com atenção. Um grande rolo de papel gira devagar dentro dele. As teclas se movem junto com o papel enquanto ele gira. Valentina se lembra desse piano agora.

The music teacher uses this piano for her afternoon class. It can play songs by itself with the right roll inside. The teacher forgot to turn it off after class.

A professora de música usa esse piano na aula da tarde dela. Ele consegue tocar músicas sozinho com o rolo certo dentro. A professora esqueceu de desligá-lo depois da aula.

Valentina finds the switch on the side of the piano. She turns it off, and the room goes quiet. She checks the door and locks it again.

Valentina encontra o interruptor na lateral do piano. Ela o desliga, e a sala fica em silêncio. Ela verifica a porta e a tranca novamente.

The next morning, Valentina tells the music teacher what happened. The teacher laughs and says sorry. "I always forget that switch," she says. "Next time, I'll check it twice before I leave."

Na manhã seguinte, Valentina conta à professora de música o que aconteceu. A professora ri e pede desculpas. "Eu sempre esqueço esse interruptor", ela diz. "Da próxima vez, vou conferir duas vezes antes de sair."

Valentina smiles and pushes her cart down the hallway.
