The Office Karaoke Night

The office party is on Friday evening. The big meeting room has a small stage and a karaoke machine. Alma's boss says, "Everyone sings tonight. No excuses."

A festa do escritório é na sexta à noite. A sala de reuniões grande tem um palquinho e uma máquina de karaokê. A chefe da Alma diz: "Hoje todo mundo canta. Sem desculpas."

Alma does not like singing. At home, she sings only in the shower. Tonight there is no shower, and forty people watch. Her friend from the sales team gives her a thumbs-up. She picks an old, slow song and hopes it goes well.

Alma não gosta de cantar. Em casa, ela só canta no chuveiro. Esta noite não tem chuveiro, e quarenta pessoas estão olhando. Uma amiga da equipe de vendas faz um sinal de joinha para ela. Ela escolhe uma música antiga e lenta e torce para dar certo.

When her name comes up, she walks to the stage. Her hands are cold. The first line is too high, and her voice cracks. A few people look at their drinks. She wants to put the microphone down and leave.

Quando chamam o nome dela, ela vai até o palco. Suas mãos estão frias. O primeiro verso é agudo demais, e a voz dela falha. Algumas pessoas olham para os copos. Ela quer largar o microfone e ir embora.

Then the music reaches the second half of the song. Someone walks onto the stage. It is Mikko, a quiet man from accounting. His desk is two desks away from hers. He says very little at work.

Então a música chega à segunda metade. Alguém sobe ao palco. É o Mikko, um homem quieto da contabilidade. A mesa dele fica a duas mesas da dela. Ele fala muito pouco no trabalho.

He holds a second microphone. "I know this one," he whispers.

Ele segura um segundo microfone. "Eu conheço essa", sussurra.

They sing the second half together. Mikko sings badly too, in a low, flat voice. Alma starts to laugh, and the whole room laughs with her. Someone at the back claps along.

Eles cantam juntos a segunda metade. Mikko também canta mal, com uma voz grave e sem afinação. Alma começa a rir, e a sala inteira ri com ela. Alguém no fundo bate palmas no ritmo.

When the song ends, everyone cheers. Mikko hands her a glass of water.

Quando a música termina, todos aplaudem. Mikko lhe entrega um copo de água.

"Next time, you choose a different song," he says.

"Da próxima vez, escolha outra música", diz ele.

"Next time?" Alma asks.

"Da próxima vez?", pergunta Alma.

"Yes," he says. "I know about ten more."

"Sim", diz ele. "Eu conheço umas dez outras."
