The Note on the Dryer

Ada lives on the third floor of an old apartment building. The building has one shared laundry room in the basement. Every Tuesday, she does her laundry there.

Ada mora no terceiro andar de um prédio antigo. O prédio tem uma lavanderia compartilhada no porão. Toda terça-feira, ela lava roupa lá.

Lately, a stranger's clothes are in the dryer when Ada arrives. Each time, there is a small note on top. The notes say, "Sorry, I'm always late. Please just move them to a basket."

Ultimamente, as roupas de um estranho estão na secadora quando Ada chega. Toda vez, há um pequeno bilhete em cima delas. Os bilhetes dizem: "Desculpe, estou sempre atrasado. Por favor, apenas coloque as roupas em uma cesta."

At first, Ada feels a little annoyed. She thinks the man is careless with his time. She moves his clothes to a basket without a word.

No início, Ada fica um pouco irritada. Ela acha que o homem é descuidado com o tempo. Ela coloca as roupas dele em uma cesta sem dizer nada.

One Tuesday, Ada arrives early and meets him. His name is Jovan, and he lives on the first floor. "I'm sorry about the notes," he says. "I work the night shift at the hospital."

Certa terça-feira, Ada chega cedo e o encontra. O nome dele é Jovan, e ele mora no primeiro andar. "Desculpe pelos bilhetes", diz ele. "Eu trabalho no turno da noite no hospital."

"Oh," Ada says. "I didn't know that."

"Ah", diz Ada. "Eu não sabia disso."

"I finish work at seven in the morning," Jovan explains. "I start my laundry before my shift. But I can't come back in time."

"Eu termino de trabalhar às sete da manhã", explica Jovan. "Eu coloco minha roupa para lavar antes do meu turno. Mas não consigo voltar a tempo."

Ada smiles. "That makes sense now," she says. "I thought you just forgot about your clothes."

Ada sorri. "Agora faz sentido", diz ela. "Eu pensei que você só esquecia da sua roupa."

"No, I think about them all night," Jovan says. They both laugh.

"Não, eu penso nela a noite toda", diz Jovan. Os dois riem.

After that day, Ada changes her Tuesday routine. She waits until Jovan gets home from his night shift. They fold their laundry together and talk about their week.

Depois daquele dia, Ada muda sua rotina de terça-feira. Ela espera até Jovan chegar em casa do turno da noite. Eles dobram a roupa juntos e conversam sobre a semana.

Now the notes on the dryer say something different. "Thanks for waiting," they say. "See you next Tuesday."

Agora os bilhetes na secadora dizem algo diferente. "Obrigado por esperar", dizem eles. "Até a próxima terça-feira."
