The Missing Tent Poles

Marek and Luz drove to the campsite on Friday evening. They wanted to set up before dark. Marek opened the car trunk and pulled out the tent bag.

Marek e Luz dirigiram até o acampamento na noite de sexta-feira. Eles queriam montar tudo antes de escurecer. Marek abriu o porta-malas do carro e tirou a bolsa da barraca.

"Where are the poles?" he asked. He searched the bag twice. He found only the tent cloth and the stakes.

"Cadê as varetas?", ele perguntou. Ele procurou na bolsa duas vezes. Encontrou só a lona da barraca e as estacas.

"We packed them at home," Luz said. "I remember putting them by the door."

"A gente arrumou elas em casa", disse Luz. "Eu lembro de ter colocado perto da porta."

"They're still by the door," Marek said. "We left them at home."

"Elas ainda estão perto da porta", disse Marek. "A gente deixou elas em casa."

The sky grew dark, and the campsite had no store nearby. Luz looked around and had an idea.

O céu foi escurecendo, e não havia nenhuma loja perto do acampamento. Luz olhou ao redor e teve uma ideia.

"We can use branches instead," she said. "Strong ones, from that tree over there."

"A gente pode usar galhos no lugar delas", ela disse. "Uns bem firmes, daquela árvore ali."

Marek smiled and grabbed his small saw from the car. He cut four straight branches. Then he trimmed the small sticks off each one.

Marek sorriu e pegou sua serrinha no carro. Ele cortou quatro galhos retos. Depois tirou os gravetos pequenos de cada um.

Luz held the tent cloth. Marek pushed the branches through the fabric loops. It took a long time, but the branches fit well.

Luz segurou a lona da barraca. Marek passou os galhos pelas alças de tecido. Demorou bastante, mas os galhos encaixaram bem.

They tied the corners with rope from the car. Then they pulled the tent tight. It stood a little crooked, but it held.

Eles amarraram os cantos com uma corda do carro. Depois esticaram bem a barraca. Ela ficou um pouco torta, mas se manteve de pé.

"It's not perfect," Marek said, "but it's ours tonight."

"Não está perfeita", disse Marek, "mas é nossa por esta noite."

Luz laughed and crawled inside first. "It even smells like pine," she said.

Luz riu e entrou primeiro, engatinhando. "Até tem cheirinho de pinho", ela disse.

They lit a small lamp and listened to the wind outside. The tent held through the night without a problem.

Eles acenderam uma lanterna pequena e ficaram ouvindo o vento lá fora. A barraca aguentou a noite toda sem problema.
