The Mislabeled Boxes

Miriam and Julian had spent the whole weekend packing their apartment. By Sunday night, forty boxes stood in neat rows by the door. Each one was marked with a black marker: kitchen, bedroom, office, bathroom.

Miriam e Julian tinham passado o fim de semana inteiro empacotando o apartamento. No domingo à noite, quarenta caixas estavam em fileiras organizadas perto da porta. Cada uma estava marcada com uma caneta preta: cozinha, quarto, escritório, banheiro.

The movers arrived early Monday morning, and everything went smoothly, or so it seemed. Boxes were carried out quickly. Within two hours, the truck was loaded and on its way to the new house.

Os carregadores chegaram cedo na segunda-feira de manhã, e tudo correu bem, ou pelo menos parecia. As caixas foram levadas rapidamente. Em duas horas, o caminhão estava carregado e a caminho da nova casa.

That evening, tired but hopeful, Miriam opened the box labeled "kitchen" first. Instead of plates and pans, she found a tangle of phone chargers. There was also an old alarm clock and a drawer full of pens. "Julian," she called, "this isn't the kitchen box."

Naquela noite, cansada mas esperançosa, Miriam abriu primeiro a caixa marcada "cozinha". Em vez de pratos e panelas, ela encontrou um emaranhado de carregadores de celular. Também havia um despertador velho e uma gaveta cheia de canetas. "Julian", ela chamou, "esta não é a caixa da cozinha."

Julian came over, confused. He opened the box marked "office" and found towels and a shower curtain inside. "This is the bathroom stuff," he said, frowning. "I think we mixed up the labels while we were packing."

They opened three more boxes, and the pattern continued. The labels didn't match the contents at all. Someone, in the rush of the weekend, had clearly written the wrong word on several boxes.

"Okay, we need a system," Miriam said, pulling out a notepad. "Let's open every box, check what's inside, and relabel it properly."

"Ok, precisamos de um sistema", disse Miriam, pegando um bloco de notas. "Vamos abrir cada caixa, conferir o que tem dentro e reetiquetar direito."

It took them nearly two hours. Julian opened each box and called out the contents. Miriam crossed out the old label and wrote a new one that actually matched. Some boxes held a strange mix of items from two or three rooms at once.

Isso levou quase duas horas. Julian abria cada caixa e dizia em voz alta o conteúdo. Miriam riscava a etiqueta antiga e escrevia uma nova que realmente correspondia. Algumas caixas tinham uma mistura estranha de itens de dois ou três cômodos ao mesmo tempo.

"How did we even manage this?" Julian asked, laughing as he found a single shoe inside a box labeled "books."

"Como a gente conseguiu fazer isso?", Julian perguntou, rindo ao encontrar um único sapato dentro de uma caixa marcada "livros."

"We were exhausted and packing at midnight," Miriam reminded him. "I'm honestly impressed we labeled anything correctly."

"Estávamos exaustos e empacotando à meia-noite", Miriam o lembrou. "Sinceramente, estou impressionada que conseguimos etiquetar alguma coisa direito."

By the time they finished, every box had a new, accurate label. A rough map of the new house was taped to the fridge. It showed which room each box belonged in.

Quando terminaram, cada caixa tinha uma etiqueta nova e correta. Um mapa simples da casa nova estava colado na geladeira. Ele mostrava a qual cômodo cada caixa pertencia.

"There," Miriam said, taping the last label shut. "Now let's actually unpack the kitchen box that has real dishes in it."

"Pronto", disse Miriam, colando a última etiqueta. "Agora vamos realmente desempacotar a caixa da cozinha que tem pratos de verdade dentro."
