The Mislabeled Boxes

Miriam and Julian had spent the whole weekend packing their apartment. By Sunday night, forty boxes stood in neat rows by the door. Each one was marked with a black marker: kitchen, bedroom, office, bathroom.

Miriam y Julian habían pasado todo el fin de semana empacando su apartamento. Para el domingo por la noche, cuarenta cajas estaban alineadas en filas ordenadas junto a la puerta. Cada una estaba marcada con un marcador negro: cocina, dormitorio, oficina, baño.

The movers arrived early Monday morning, and everything went smoothly, or so it seemed. Boxes were carried out quickly. Within two hours, the truck was loaded and on its way to the new house.

Los mudanceros llegaron temprano el lunes por la mañana, y todo salió bien, o al menos eso parecía. Las cajas se sacaron rápidamente. En dos horas, el camión estaba cargado y en camino a la nueva casa.

That evening, tired but hopeful, Miriam opened the box labeled "kitchen" first. Instead of plates and pans, she found a tangle of phone chargers. There was also an old alarm clock and a drawer full of pens. "Julian," she called, "this isn't the kitchen box."

Esa noche, cansada pero esperanzada, Miriam abrió primero la caja etiquetada como «cocina». En lugar de platos y sartenes, encontró un enredo de cargadores de teléfono. También había un despertador viejo y un cajón lleno de bolígrafos. «Julian», llamó, «esta no es la caja de la cocina».

Julian came over, confused. He opened the box marked "office" and found towels and a shower curtain inside. "This is the bathroom stuff," he said, frowning. "I think we mixed up the labels while we were packing."

They opened three more boxes, and the pattern continued. The labels didn't match the contents at all. Someone, in the rush of the weekend, had clearly written the wrong word on several boxes.

Abrieron tres cajas más, y el patrón continuó. Las etiquetas no coincidían para nada con el contenido. Alguien, con las prisas del fin de semana, claramente había escrito la palabra equivocada en varias cajas.

"Okay, we need a system," Miriam said, pulling out a notepad. "Let's open every box, check what's inside, and relabel it properly."

«Bien, necesitamos un sistema», dijo Miriam, sacando un cuaderno. «Abramos cada caja, revisemos qué hay dentro y volvamos a etiquetarla correctamente».

It took them nearly two hours. Julian opened each box and called out the contents. Miriam crossed out the old label and wrote a new one that actually matched. Some boxes held a strange mix of items from two or three rooms at once.

Les tomó casi dos horas. Julian abría cada caja y decía en voz alta el contenido. Miriam tachaba la etiqueta vieja y escribía una nueva que sí coincidía. Algunas cajas tenían una mezcla extraña de artículos de dos o tres habitaciones a la vez.

"How did we even manage this?" Julian asked, laughing as he found a single shoe inside a box labeled "books."

«¿Cómo logramos hacer esto?», preguntó Julian, riendo al encontrar un solo zapato dentro de una caja etiquetada como «libros».

"We were exhausted and packing at midnight," Miriam reminded him. "I'm honestly impressed we labeled anything correctly."

«Estábamos agotados y empacando a medianoche», le recordó Miriam. «Honestamente, me sorprende que hayamos etiquetado algo correctamente».

By the time they finished, every box had a new, accurate label. A rough map of the new house was taped to the fridge. It showed which room each box belonged in.

Para cuando terminaron, cada caja tenía una etiqueta nueva y precisa. Un mapa aproximado de la casa nueva estaba pegado con cinta al refrigerador. Mostraba a qué habitación pertenecía cada caja.

"There," Miriam said, taping the last label shut. "Now let's actually unpack the kitchen box that has real dishes in it."

«Listo», dijo Miriam, pegando la última etiqueta. «Ahora sí desempaquemos la caja de la cocina que tiene platos de verdad».
