The Group Project Mixup

Adam and Rachel had been paired together for their history project on ancient trade routes. They had agreed to split the work over a video call. But the call had been short and a little rushed.

Adam e Rachel tinham sido colocados em dupla para o projeto de história sobre antigas rotas comerciais. Eles tinham combinado de dividir o trabalho numa chamada de vídeo. Mas a chamada tinha sido curta e um pouco corrida.

For a week, each of them worked hard on their own part. Adam spent hours making a detailed map with routes drawn in different colors. He was proud of how clear it looked.

Durante uma semana, cada um trabalhou duro na sua parte. Adam passou horas fazendo um mapa detalhado com as rotas desenhadas em cores diferentes. Ele estava orgulhoso de como tinha ficado claro.

Rachel, meanwhile, had also been drawing maps. She had assumed that Adam was writing the essay, since that was what she remembered from the call. She stayed up late finishing her own map, adding labels for every city she could find.

Rachel, por sua vez, também tinha ficado desenhando mapas. Ela tinha presumido que Adam estava escrevendo a redação, já que era isso que ela lembrava da chamada. Ela ficou até tarde terminando o próprio mapa, adicionando legendas para cada cidade que conseguia encontrar.

The night before the project was due, they met at the library to put everything together. Adam opened his folder and spread out his map. "Here's mine," he said proudly. "I think the colors really help explain the routes."

Na noite anterior à entrega do projeto, eles se encontraram na biblioteca para juntar tudo. Adam abriu a pasta e estendeu o mapa. "Aqui está o meu", disse ele com orgulho. "Acho que as cores ajudam bastante a explicar as rotas."

Rachel stared at it, confused. "Wait," she said slowly, "I made a map too. Weren't you supposed to write the essay?"

Rachel olhou para o mapa, confusa. "Espera", ela disse devagar, "eu também fiz um mapa. Você não devia estar escrevendo a redação?"

Adam's face fell. "I thought you said you'd handle the essay, and I'd do the map."

O rosto de Adam despencou. "Eu pensei que você tinha dito que ia cuidar da redação, e eu faria o mapa."

"I remember it the opposite way," Rachel said, pulling out her own map to show him.

"Eu lembro do contrário", disse Rachel, tirando o próprio mapa para mostrar a ele.

They looked at each other, and then both looked at the two nearly identical maps on the table. Neither of them had written a single word of the essay. The project was due at nine the next morning.

Eles se olharam, e depois os dois olharam para os dois mapas quase idênticos em cima da mesa. Nenhum dos dois tinha escrito uma única palavra da redação. O projeto tinha que ser entregue às nove da manhã seguinte.

"Okay, this is bad, but it's fixable," Rachel said, taking a breath. "If we start now, we can still finish it."

"Tá bom, isso é ruim, mas dá pra resolver", disse Rachel, respirando fundo. "Se começarmos agora, ainda dá tempo de terminar."

"You're right," Adam said. "Let's use my map, since it has more detail, and write the essay together instead of separately."

"Você tem razão", disse Adam. "Vamos usar o meu mapa, já que tem mais detalhes, e escrever a redação juntos em vez de separados."

They worked side by side for the next three hours. They took turns typing sentences while the other checked facts. By midnight, the essay was finished, and Rachel's extra map became a backup illustration for the last page.

Eles trabalharam lado a lado pelas três horas seguintes. Se revezavam digitando as frases enquanto o outro conferia os fatos. Até a meia-noite, a redação estava pronta, e o mapa extra de Rachel virou uma ilustração reserva para a última página.

"Next time," Adam said, closing his laptop, "we're writing everything down after we talk."

"Da próxima vez", disse Adam, fechando o notebook, "a gente escreve tudo depois de conversar."

Rachel laughed. "Deal. In writing, this time."

Rachel riu. "Combinado. Por escrito, dessa vez."
