The Group Project Mixup

Adam and Rachel had been paired together for their history project on ancient trade routes. They had agreed to split the work over a video call. But the call had been short and a little rushed.

एडम और रेचल को प्राचीन व्यापार-मार्गों पर अपने इतिहास के प्रोजेक्ट के लिए जोड़ी में रखा गया था। उन्होंने वीडियो कॉल पर काम बाँटने की बात तय की थी। लेकिन वह कॉल छोटी और थोड़ी जल्दबाज़ी वाली थी।

For a week, each of them worked hard on their own part. Adam spent hours making a detailed map with routes drawn in different colors. He was proud of how clear it looked.

एक हफ़्ते तक दोनों ने अपने-अपने हिस्से पर मेहनत की। एडम ने घंटों लगाकर एक विस्तृत नक़्शा बनाया जिसमें रास्ते अलग-अलग रंगों में खींचे थे। उसे इस बात पर गर्व था कि वह कितना साफ़ दिख रहा था।

Rachel, meanwhile, had also been drawing maps. She had assumed that Adam was writing the essay, since that was what she remembered from the call. She stayed up late finishing her own map, adding labels for every city she could find.

इधर रेचल भी नक़्शे बना रही थी। उसने मान लिया था कि निबंध एडम लिख रहा है, क्योंकि कॉल से उसे यही याद था। वह देर रात तक जागकर अपना नक़्शा पूरा करती रही और उसमें हर वह शहर जोड़ती रही जो उसे मिल सका।

The night before the project was due, they met at the library to put everything together. Adam opened his folder and spread out his map. "Here's mine," he said proudly. "I think the colors really help explain the routes."

प्रोजेक्ट जमा होने की पिछली रात वे सब कुछ जोड़ने के लिए लाइब्रेरी में मिले। एडम ने अपना फ़ोल्डर खोला और अपना नक़्शा फैला दिया। "यह रहा मेरा," उसने गर्व से कहा। "मुझे लगता है रंगों से रास्ते समझाने में सचमुच मदद मिलती है।"

Rachel stared at it, confused. "Wait," she said slowly, "I made a map too. Weren't you supposed to write the essay?"

रेचल उलझन में उसे घूरती रही। "रुको," उसने धीरे से कहा, "मैंने भी एक नक़्शा बनाया है। निबंध तो तुम्हें लिखना था ना?"

Adam's face fell. "I thought you said you'd handle the essay, and I'd do the map."

एडम का चेहरा उतर गया। "मुझे लगा तुमने कहा था कि निबंध तुम सँभालोगी और नक़्शा मैं बनाऊँगा।"

"I remember it the opposite way," Rachel said, pulling out her own map to show him.

"मुझे तो इसका उल्टा याद है," रेचल ने कहा और अपना नक़्शा निकालकर उसे दिखाया।

They looked at each other, and then both looked at the two nearly identical maps on the table. Neither of them had written a single word of the essay. The project was due at nine the next morning.

उन्होंने एक-दूसरे को देखा, और फिर दोनों ने मेज़ पर पड़े दो लगभग एक जैसे नक़्शों को देखा। दोनों में से किसी ने निबंध का एक शब्द भी नहीं लिखा था। प्रोजेक्ट अगली सुबह नौ बजे जमा होना था।

"Okay, this is bad, but it's fixable," Rachel said, taking a breath. "If we start now, we can still finish it."

"ठीक है, यह बुरा है, लेकिन इसे सुधारा जा सकता है," रेचल ने गहरी साँस लेते हुए कहा। "अगर हम अभी शुरू करें, तो अब भी पूरा कर सकते हैं।"

"You're right," Adam said. "Let's use my map, since it has more detail, and write the essay together instead of separately."

"तुम सही हो," एडम ने कहा। "चलो मेरा नक़्शा इस्तेमाल करते हैं, क्योंकि उसमें ज़्यादा ब्योरा है, और निबंध अलग-अलग लिखने के बजाय साथ मिलकर लिखते हैं।"

They worked side by side for the next three hours. They took turns typing sentences while the other checked facts. By midnight, the essay was finished, and Rachel's extra map became a backup illustration for the last page.

उन्होंने अगले तीन घंटे अगल-बगल बैठकर काम किया। एक बारी-बारी से वाक्य टाइप करता, जबकि दूसरा तथ्य जाँचता। आधी रात तक निबंध पूरा हो गया, और रेचल का अतिरिक्त नक़्शा आख़िरी पन्ने के लिए एक बैकअप चित्र बन गया।

"Next time," Adam said, closing his laptop, "we're writing everything down after we talk."

"अगली बार," एडम ने अपना लैपटॉप बंद करते हुए कहा, "बात करने के बाद हम सब कुछ लिख लेंगे।"

Rachel laughed. "Deal. In writing, this time."

रेचल हँस पड़ी। "पक्का। इस बार लिखित में।"
