The Grandfather's Glacier

Fifty years after his grandfather photographed a glacier, Malcolm hikes to the same rock to see how far the ice has gone.

The print had lived for fifty years in a biscuit tin, and Malcolm carried it up the valley in a freezer bag inside a hardback book, which he had judged the safest place for it. It showed a wall of ice filling the head of the valley, grey-white and ribbed. A small figure in a dark jacket stood on a rock in the foreground, one arm raised against the glare. On the back, in his grandfather's pencil, were a date and four words: "Still bigger than I expected."
A fotografia vivera cinquenta anos numa lata de biscoitos, e Malcolm a levou vale acima num saquinho de congelador, dentro de um livro de capa dura, que julgara o lugar mais seguro. Ela mostrava uma muralha de gelo preenchendo a cabeceira do vale, cinza-esbranquiçada e estriada. Uma pequena figura de jaqueta escura estava de pé numa rocha em primeiro plano, com um braço erguido contra o reflexo. No verso, a lápis, na letra do avô, havia uma data e quatro palavras: "Ainda maior do que eu esperava."
The path followed a river that was the colour of weak tea and then, after the second hour, the colour of milk. Malcolm had read the trail notes the night before. The end of the glacier was now about five kilometres further up than the old maps suggested, a sentence he had read twice without taking in. He climbed steadily, stopping at each new bend to compare the print with the view, and the ridgelines matched, every one, with a precision that made the missing part easier to see.
A trilha seguia um rio que era da cor de chá fraco e depois, a partir da segunda hora, da cor de leite. Malcolm lera as notas da trilha na véspera. O fim da geleira agora ficava uns cinco quilômetros mais acima do que sugeriam os mapas antigos, frase que ele lera duas vezes sem absorver. Subiu num ritmo constante, parando em cada nova curva para comparar a foto com a paisagem, e as linhas das cristas coincidiam, todas elas, com uma precisão que tornava mais fácil enxergar a parte que faltava.
By midday the valley held nothing but gravel, meltwater and the occasional boulder the size of a van. The ice, when he finally saw it, was a long way off and a long way up, a pale tongue wedged into a notch between two peaks. Nowhere between him and it was there any trace of the wall that the print showed. Beside the path ran a line of scraped rock, thirty metres above his head, which he understood after a moment to mark the height of the glacier on the day his grandfather stood here.
Ao meio-dia, o vale não continha nada além de cascalho, água de degelo e um ou outro matacão do tamanho de uma van. O gelo, quando finalmente o viu, estava muito longe e muito alto, uma língua pálida encaixada num entalhe entre dois picos. Em nenhum ponto entre ele e o gelo havia vestígio da muralha que a fotografia mostrava. Ao lado da trilha corria uma faixa de rocha raspada, trinta metros acima de sua cabeça, que ele entendeu, depois de um instante, marcar a altura da geleira no dia em que o avô estivera ali.
The rock was easy to find. What made it unmistakable was the lichen: a thumb-shaped smear of orange on its north face, exactly as it appeared in the print, only a little wider now. He climbed on to it with some care, because it was wet, and stood where the small figure had stood. Having imagined this moment for months, he noticed that he felt less than he had planned to, and was paying very close attention to his boots instead.
A rocha foi fácil de achar. O que a tornava inconfundível era o líquen: uma mancha laranja, em forma de polegar, na face norte, exatamente como aparecia na foto, só que um pouco mais larga agora. Ele subiu nela com cuidado, porque estava molhada, e ficou onde a pequena figura estivera. Depois de imaginar aquele momento durante meses, notou que sentia menos do que havia planejado e estava prestando muita atenção às próprias botas.
He held the print at arm's length against the valley and let the two scenes settle over one another. The ridges lined up. The dark band of rock halfway up the left-hand peak lined up. The wall of ice that had once filled the lower half of the frame was simply not there. What stood in its place was a quantity of air and distance that the paper could not account for. It was the sound, not the sight, that took him by surprise: a steady ticking of meltwater falling somewhere out of view, in a place that used to be solid.
Segurou a fotografia à distância do braço contra o vale e deixou as duas cenas se assentarem uma sobre a outra. As cristas se alinhavam. A faixa escura de rocha na metade do pico da esquerda se alinhava. A muralha de gelo que antes preenchia a metade inferior do quadro simplesmente não estava lá. No lugar dela havia uma quantidade de ar e de distância que o papel não conseguia explicar. Foi o som, e não a visão, que o pegou de surpresa: um tique-taque constante de água de degelo caindo em algum ponto fora de vista, num lugar que antes era sólido.
Malcolm took the photograph with his phone, then another, in case. Had his grandfather known, he thought, he would probably have said something dry about the weather; the man had never in his life commented directly on anything he cared about. A small wind came down the valley and lifted the corner of the print, and he put his thumb on it until it settled.
Malcolm tirou uma foto com o celular, depois outra, por precaução. Se o avô soubesse, pensou, provavelmente diria alguma coisa seca sobre o tempo; o homem nunca na vida comentara diretamente nada que lhe importasse. Um vento leve desceu o vale e levantou o canto da fotografia, e ele pôs o polegar sobre ela até que assentasse.
Before climbing down he turned the print over, took the pencil from his breast pocket, and wrote the date beneath the old one, in his own handwriting, which was worse. Under it he added four words of his own, then stopped, erased two of them, and left the rest. He slid the print back into its bag and the bag into the book, and started down the valley the long way, beside a river that was, for the moment, still the colour of milk.
Antes de descer, virou a foto, tirou o lápis do bolso da camisa e escreveu a data embaixo da antiga, com a própria letra, que era pior. Embaixo dela acrescentou quatro palavras suas, depois parou, apagou duas e deixou o resto. Deslizou a fotografia de volta no saquinho e o saquinho no livro, e começou a descer o vale pelo caminho mais longo, ao lado de um rio que ainda era, por enquanto, da cor do leite.
