Ariel wanted to cook for the whole family. She chose her grandmother's chicken stew. She had the recipe on an old card in her grandmother's handwriting.
Ariel queria cozinhar para a família toda. Escolheu o ensopado de frango da avó. Tinha a receita num cartão antigo, com a letra da avó.
The card was short. It said: "Onions, chicken, tomatoes, 1 spoon chili pepper, salt." Ariel read it twice. Then she took a big spoon from the drawer. She added the chili pepper.
O cartão era curto. Dizia: "Cebolas, frango, tomates, 1 colher de pimenta, sal." Ariel leu duas vezes. Depois pegou uma colher grande na gaveta. Pôs a pimenta.
At noon, the family sat down at the table. There were eight people. Ariel put the pot in the middle and smiled.
Ao meio-dia, a família sentou à mesa. Eram oito pessoas. Ariel colocou a panela no meio e sorriu.
Her uncle took the first bite. His face turned red. He drank three glasses of water. Her cousin started to cry. Her father said, "It is… very strong."
O tio dela deu a primeira garfada. O rosto dele ficou vermelho. Ele bebeu três copos de água. A prima começou a chorar. O pai dela disse: "Está… bem forte."
Ariel tried it herself. Her eyes filled with tears. "Oh no," she said. "I made it too hot."
Ariel provou também. Seus olhos se encheram de lágrimas. "Ah, não", disse ela. "Ficou picante demais."
Her grandmother tasted a small bit. She stopped. Then she began to laugh so hard that she coughed.
A avó provou um pouquinho. Parou. Então começou a rir tanto que tossiu.
"What is funny?" Ariel asked.
"O que é tão engraçado?", perguntou Ariel.
"My card says one spoon," her grandmother said. "I always mean the small one. The tea spoon!"
"Meu cartão diz uma colher", disse a avó. "Eu sempre quero dizer a pequena. A colher de chá!"
Then she went into the kitchen. "Bring me yogurt and make some rice," she said.
Depois foi para a cozinha. "Traga-me iogurte e faça um pouco de arroz", disse.
She stirred the yogurt into the stew. It became soft and pink. They served it over the rice. Now it was mild and warm, and everyone ate two plates.
Ela misturou o iogurte no ensopado. Ele ficou macio e rosado. Serviram sobre o arroz. Agora estava suave e quentinho, e todos comeram dois pratos.
After lunch, Ariel took a pen. On the old card, she wrote "small" before "spoon."
Depois do almoço, Ariel pegou uma caneta. No cartão antigo, escreveu "pequena" depois de "colher".
