Celia took the elevator home every evening at six. Today she carried her shopping. She also had a small bag of grapes.
सीलिया हर शाम छह बजे लिफ़्ट से घर जाती थी। आज उसके हाथ में ख़रीदारी का सामान था। उसके पास अंगूरों का एक छोटा थैला भी था।
Between the fourth and fifth floors, the elevator shook and stopped. The lights stayed on, but the doors did not open. A man stood in the corner. He lived on her floor. She saw him every day, but they only said "hello."
चौथी और पाँचवीं मंज़िल के बीच लिफ़्ट हिली और रुक गई। बत्तियाँ जलती रहीं, लेकिन दरवाज़े नहीं खुले। एक आदमी कोने में खड़ा था। वह उसी की मंज़िल पर रहता था। वह उसे रोज़ देखती थी, लेकिन वे बस "नमस्ते" ही कहते थे।
He pressed the red button. A voice said, "Please wait. Help will come in twenty minutes."
उसने लाल बटन दबाया। एक आवाज़ ने कहा, "कृपया प्रतीक्षा करें। बीस मिनट में मदद पहुँचेगी।"
"Twenty minutes!" Celia said. She sat down on the floor. After a while, she opened her bag of grapes. "Do you want some? I'm Celia."
"बीस मिनट!" सीलिया ने कहा। वह फ़र्श पर बैठ गई। कुछ देर बाद उसने अपना अंगूरों का थैला खोला। "आप लेंगे? मैं सीलिया हूँ।"
"Thank you. I'm Omar," the man said. He sat down and took a grape.
"शुक्रिया। मैं ओमर हूँ," आदमी ने कहा। वह बैठ गया और उसने एक अंगूर उठा लिया।
They ate and looked at the ceiling. Then Omar asked, "Where did you grow up?"
वे खाते हुए छत की ओर देखते रहे। फिर ओमर ने पूछा, "आप कहाँ पली-बढ़ी हैं?"
"In a small town with a clock in the square," Celia said.
"एक छोटे-से क़स्बे में, जहाँ चौक में एक घड़ी लगी थी," सीलिया ने कहा।
Omar looked at her. "The clock that never shows the right time?"
ओमर ने उसकी ओर देखा। "वही घड़ी जो कभी सही समय नहीं बताती?"
"Yes! How do you know that?"
"हाँ! आपको कैसे पता?"
"My school was next to it," he said.
"मेरा स्कूल उसके बग़ल में था," उसने कहा।
Celia laughed so hard that a grape fell on the floor. "My school was across the street!"
सीलिया इतनी ज़ोर से हँसी कि एक अंगूर फ़र्श पर गिर गया। "मेरा स्कूल तो सड़क के उस पार था!"
They talked about the baker and the river. They talked about the late bus. Time went fast.
उन्होंने नानबाई और नदी की बातें कीं। उन्होंने देर से आने वाली बस की बातें कीं। समय तेज़ी से बीत गया।
Suddenly the elevator moved, and the doors opened on their floor. Omar stood up and picked up her bag. Celia held out the last grape, and he took it.
अचानक लिफ़्ट चल पड़ी, और दरवाज़े उनकी मंज़िल पर खुल गए। ओमर खड़ा हुआ और उसने उसका थैला उठा लिया। सीलिया ने आख़िरी अंगूर आगे बढ़ाया, और उसने वह ले लिया।
