Celia took the elevator home every evening at six. Today she carried her shopping. She also had a small bag of grapes.
Celia naik lift pulang setiap sore pukul enam. Hari ini ia membawa belanjaannya. Ia juga membawa sekantong kecil anggur.
Between the fourth and fifth floors, the elevator shook and stopped. The lights stayed on, but the doors did not open. A man stood in the corner. He lived on her floor. She saw him every day, but they only said "hello."
Di antara lantai empat dan lima, lift berguncang dan berhenti. Lampunya tetap menyala, tetapi pintunya tidak terbuka. Seorang pria berdiri di sudut. Ia tinggal di lantai yang sama dengannya. Celia melihatnya setiap hari, tetapi mereka hanya saling mengucapkan "halo."
He pressed the red button. A voice said, "Please wait. Help will come in twenty minutes."
Pria itu menekan tombol merah. Sebuah suara berkata, "Mohon tunggu. Bantuan akan datang dalam dua puluh menit."
"Twenty minutes!" Celia said. She sat down on the floor. After a while, she opened her bag of grapes. "Do you want some? I'm Celia."
"Dua puluh menit!" kata Celia. Ia duduk di lantai. Beberapa saat kemudian, ia membuka kantong anggurnya. "Mau? Aku Celia."
"Thank you. I'm Omar," the man said. He sat down and took a grape.
"Terima kasih. Aku Omar," kata pria itu. Ia duduk dan mengambil sebutir anggur.
They ate and looked at the ceiling. Then Omar asked, "Where did you grow up?"
Mereka makan sambil menatap langit-langit. Lalu Omar bertanya, "Kamu dibesarkan di mana?"
"In a small town with a clock in the square," Celia said.
"Di sebuah kota kecil dengan jam di alun-alunnya," kata Celia.
Omar looked at her. "The clock that never shows the right time?"
Omar menatapnya. "Jam yang tidak pernah menunjukkan waktu yang tepat?"
"Yes! How do you know that?"
"Ya! Dari mana kamu tahu?"
"My school was next to it," he said.
"Sekolahku di sebelahnya," katanya.
Celia laughed so hard that a grape fell on the floor. "My school was across the street!"
Celia tertawa begitu keras sampai sebutir anggur jatuh ke lantai. "Sekolahku di seberang jalan!"
They talked about the baker and the river. They talked about the late bus. Time went fast.
Mereka membicarakan tukang roti dan sungai. Mereka membicarakan bus yang selalu terlambat. Waktu berlalu cepat.
Suddenly the elevator moved, and the doors opened on their floor. Omar stood up and picked up her bag. Celia held out the last grape, and he took it.
Tiba-tiba lift bergerak, dan pintunya terbuka di lantai mereka. Omar berdiri dan mengangkat tas Celia. Celia mengulurkan sebutir anggur terakhir, dan Omar menerimanya.
