The Shared Apartment Decision

Dev and Anika have been together for three years. They've finally decided it's time to move in together. The hard part isn't the decision itself. It's choosing between the two apartments they both like.

देव और अनिका तीन साल से साथ हैं। आखिरकार उन्होंने तय किया है कि अब साथ रहने का समय आ गया है। मुश्किल फ़ैसला खुद नहीं है। मुश्किल यह है कि उन दो अपार्टमेंटों में से एक चुनना जो दोनों को पसंद हैं।

The first apartment is smaller, but it's five minutes from Anika's office. She could walk to work every morning. The second one is bigger, with a real kitchen and a small balcony. But it's a thirty-minute train ride for her, and a shorter one for Dev.

पहला अपार्टमेंट छोटा है, पर अनिका के ऑफ़िस से पाँच मिनट की दूरी पर है। वह हर सुबह पैदल काम पर जा सकती है। दूसरा बड़ा है, उसमें एक असली किचन और एक छोटी बालकनी है। पर उसके लिए वहाँ से तीस मिनट की ट्रेन का सफ़र है, और देव के लिए उससे छोटा।

"I keep going back and forth," Anika says, spreading photos of both places across the kitchen table. "The commute matters, but so does having space that doesn't feel cramped."

"मैं बार-बार इधर-उधर हो रही हूँ," अनिका किचन की मेज़ पर दोनों जगहों की तस्वीरें फैलाते हुए कहती है। "आने-जाने की दूरी मायने रखती है, पर ऐसी जगह होना भी जो तंग न लगे।"

Dev studies the photos for a long moment. "What if we made a list? Not of the apartments, but of what actually matters to us once we're living there."

देव कुछ देर तक तस्वीरें देखता रहता है। "अगर हम एक लिस्ट बनाएँ तो? अपार्टमेंटों की नहीं, बल्कि उसकी जो वहाँ रहते हुए हमारे लिए सच में मायने रखता है।"

They write two lists side by side. Anika's list starts with commute time and natural light. Dev's starts with space to cook and a place for his bike. Halfway through, they notice something: neither list mentions square footage or the balcony at all.

वे साथ-साथ दो लिस्टें लिखते हैं। अनिका की लिस्ट आने-जाने के समय और प्राकृतिक रोशनी से शुरू होती है। देव की लिस्ट खाना बनाने की जगह और अपनी साइकिल रखने की जगह से। आधे में वे कुछ गौर करते हैं: किसी भी लिस्ट में न वर्ग फ़ुट का ज़िक्र है, न बालकनी का।

"We've been comparing the wrong things," Dev says, laughing at himself.

"हम गलत चीज़ों की तुलना कर रहे थे," देव खुद पर हँसते हुए कहता है।

They talk it through slowly, taking turns instead of arguing over each other. If Anika loses forty minutes a day to a longer commute, she'll be tired and short-tempered by evening. They both know it. That single fact decides it more than anything else on either list.

वे धीरे-धीरे बात करते हैं, एक-दूसरे पर चढ़कर बहस करने के बजाय बारी-बारी से बोलते हुए। अगर अनिका लंबे सफ़र में रोज़ चालीस मिनट खो देगी, तो शाम तक वह थकी और चिड़चिड़ी हो जाएगी। यह दोनों जानते हैं। किसी भी लिस्ट की बाकी बातों से ज़्यादा यही एक बात फ़ैसला कर देती है।

They choose the smaller apartment near her office. It isn't the one with the balcony, and Dev admits he'll miss the idea of it. But he also knows a short commute matters more than a view they might rarely use.

वे ऑफ़िस के पास वाला छोटा अपार्टमेंट चुनते हैं। यह बालकनी वाला नहीं है, और देव मानता है कि उसे उसका खयाल याद आएगा। पर वह यह भी जानता है कि छोटा सफ़र उस नज़ारे से ज़्यादा मायने रखता है जिसका वे शायद ही इस्तेमाल करते।

On moving day, they carry boxes up two flights of stairs together, stopping halfway to catch their breath. Anika sets down her box and looks around the empty living room.

सामान शिफ़्ट करने के दिन वे साथ मिलकर डिब्बे दो मंज़िल सीढ़ियाँ चढ़ाते हैं, बीच में साँस लेने को रुकते हुए। अनिका अपना डिब्बा नीचे रखती है और खाली लिविंग रूम में चारों ओर देखती है।

"We picked the right one," she says.

"हमने सही वाला चुना," वह कहती है।

"We'll see," Dev says, grinning, "once we've actually unpacked the boxes."

"देखते हैं," देव मुस्कुराते हुए कहता है, "जब डिब्बे सच में खोल लेंगे।"
