The Office Nickname

Somebody at the office starts calling Simon "the Sandwich Guy" during his second week. Nobody will tell him why.

ऑफ़िस में कोई साइमन को उसके दूसरे हफ़्ते में "सैंडविच वाला" कहकर बुलाने लगता है। कोई उसे वजह नहीं बताता।

It starts small. A coworker he barely knows waves and says, "Morning, Sandwich Guy," as if it's completely normal. By Thursday, three more people have used it, including his manager. His manager says it with a straight face during a meeting.

शुरुआत छोटी होती है। एक सहकर्मी, जिसे वह मुश्किल से जानता है, हाथ हिलाकर कहता है, "सुप्रभात, सैंडविच वाले," जैसे यह बिल्कुल सामान्य हो। गुरुवार तक तीन और लोग यह नाम इस्तेमाल कर चुके हैं, उसके मैनेजर समेत। उसका मैनेजर एक मीटिंग में गंभीर चेहरा बनाकर यह कहता है।

Simon asks Reese, who sits next to him, if she knows where it came from. She just shrugs. "I assumed you knew. Everyone's been calling you that since Monday."

साइमन अपने बगल में बैठने वाली रीज़ से पूछता है कि क्या उसे पता है यह कहाँ से आया। वह बस कंधे उचका देती है। "मैंने सोचा तुम्हें पता होगा। सोमवार से सब तुम्हें यही कह रहे हैं।"

"Since Monday? I don't even remember doing anything sandwich-related on Monday."

"सोमवार से? मुझे तो याद भी नहीं कि सोमवार को मैंने सैंडविच से जुड़ा कुछ किया हो।"

"Maybe it's not about you," Reese says. "Maybe it's about someone who looks like you."

"शायद यह तुम्हारे बारे में है ही नहीं," रीज़ कहती है। "शायद यह किसी ऐसे के बारे में है जो तुम्हारे जैसा दिखता है।"

That night, Simon can't stop thinking about it. He replays the whole week, searching for any moment that might explain a nickname this specific. Nothing comes to mind.

उस रात साइमन इसके बारे में सोचना बंद नहीं कर पाता। वह पूरा हफ़्ता दोबारा याद करता है, कोई ऐसा पल ढूँढ़ता है जो इतने खास उपनाम की वजह बन सके। कुछ याद नहीं आता।

The next morning, he finally asks Micah directly, since Micah seems to know everyone's business in the office. Micah laughs so hard he has to put down his coffee.

अगली सुबह वह आखिरकार सीधे माइका से पूछता है, क्योंकि माइका को ऑफ़िस में सबकी खबर रहती है। माइका इतनी ज़ोर से हँसता है कि उसे अपनी कॉफ़ी नीचे रखनी पड़ती है।

"Oh, that's not about you," Micah says. "There was a guy named Simon who worked here two years ago. He brought a sandwich to every single meeting, without fail. People still talk about it."

"अरे, यह तुम्हारे बारे में नहीं है," माइका कहता है। "दो साल पहले यहाँ साइमन नाम का एक आदमी काम करता था। वह हर एक मीटिंग में बिना चूके सैंडविच लेकर आता था। लोग आज भी उसकी बातें करते हैं।"

"So there's just… a legendary sandwich guy, and I happen to share his name?"

"यानी एक पौराणिक सैंडविच वाला है, और मैं बस उसका हमनाम निकल आया?"

"Basically, yes. When you started, people got confused and started calling you by his nickname instead of your actual name. Nobody ever corrected it."

"मोटे तौर पर, हाँ। जब तुमने जॉइन किया, तो लोग उलझ गए और तुम्हारे असली नाम के बजाय उसका उपनाम बोलने लगे। किसी ने कभी सुधारा नहीं।"

Simon isn't sure whether to feel relieved or more confused than before. At least it isn't about anything he actually did.

साइमन को समझ नहीं आता कि राहत महसूस करे या पहले से ज़्यादा उलझन। कम से कम यह उसके किए किसी काम की वजह से तो नहीं है।

He decides there's only one reasonable way to end this. The next day, he brings an enormous sandwich to the team meeting. He sets it down in the middle of the table without a word.

वह तय करता है कि इसे खत्म करने का बस एक ही सही तरीका है। अगले दिन वह टीम मीटिंग में एक विशाल सैंडविच लेकर आता है। वह बिना एक शब्द बोले उसे मेज़ के बीच में रख देता है।

Reese starts laughing first. Then the whole room follows. By the end of the day, half the office has heard the story. And the nickname, somehow, has only gotten stronger.

सबसे पहले रीज़ हँसना शुरू करती है। फिर पूरा कमरा उसके साथ हँस पड़ता है। दिन खत्म होते-होते आधा ऑफ़िस यह किस्सा सुन चुका होता है। और उपनाम, न जाने कैसे, और पक्का हो गया है।
