The Three A.M. Notification

Soraya had stopped checking her phone for notifications from Marcus months ago, or she had told herself she had, which was not quite the same thing.

Soraya había dejado de revisar su teléfono en busca de notificaciones de Marcus hacía meses, o al menos se había dicho a sí misma que lo había hecho, lo cual no era exactamente lo mismo.

So when his name started appearing again, liking old posts from a year or more back, she noticed immediately, mostly because of the time. Every notification landed at almost exactly three in the morning, a photo from last spring, a caption she'd half forgotten writing, a comment on somebody else's post she'd been tagged in. It happened once a week at first, then twice, always at that same strange, sleepless hour.

Así que cuando su nombre volvió a aparecer, dándole like a publicaciones antiguas de hacía un año o más, ella lo notó de inmediato, sobre todo por la hora. Cada notificación llegaba casi exactamente a las tres de la madrugada: una foto de la primavera pasada, un pie de foto que ella casi había olvidado haber escrito, un comentario en la publicación de otra persona en la que la habían etiquetado. Having spent the better part of a year convincing herself she was over him, Soraya found the notifications reopening a question she thought she'd closed. Was he thinking about her at three in the morning? Was this some elaborate, roundabout way of reaching out without the risk of an actual message?

Después de haber pasado gran parte de un año convenciéndose de que ya lo había superado, Soraya descubrió que las notificaciones reabrían una pregunta que creía cerrada. ¿Estaría pensando en ella a las tres de la madrugada? ¿Sería esta alguna manera elaborada e indirecta de buscarla sin arriesgarse a enviar un mensaje real?

She mentioned it to her cousin, who was unimpressed. "People's thumbs do weird things at three a.m. It's not a signal. It's insomnia."

Se lo contó a su prima, que no se impresionó: «La gente hace cosas raras con los pulgares a las tres de la madrugada. No es una señal. Es insomnio».

Rarely had a single notification cost her so much sleep for so little evidence. Soraya wanted to believe her cousin and mostly didn't. After the sixth week of it, she finally sent a message, three words, deliberately light: "You're up late."

Pocas veces una sola notificación le había costado tanto sueño por tan poca evidencia. Soraya quería creerle a su prima, pero en su mayor parte no lo lograba. Después de la sexta semana, finalmente envió un mensaje, tres palabras, deliberadamente ligero: «Estás despierto hasta tarde».

The reply came almost immediately, which surprised her more than the message itself had. "This isn't Marcus, this is his brother Yusuf, he leaves his phone logged in on the family tablet and I use it for games at night lol. Didn't realize it was posting stuff, sorry."

La respuesta llegó casi de inmediato, lo cual la sorprendió más que el propio mensaje. «Este no es Marcus, soy su hermano Yusuf. Él deja su teléfono con la sesión iniciada en la tablet de la familia y yo la uso para jugar de noche jaja. No sabía que estaba publicando cosas, perdón».

Soraya read the message twice before it fully landed. What she had spent six weeks reading as a coded, careful gesture turned out to be nothing more than an eleven-year-old bored at three in the morning. He was thumbing through an app he barely understood the etiquette of.

Soraya leyó el mensaje dos veces antes de que terminara de asimilarlo. Lo que durante seis semanas había interpretado como un gesto cuidadoso y en clave resultó no ser más que un niño de once años aburrido a las tres de la madrugada, tocando una aplicación cuyas normas apenas entendía.

"No worries," she typed back, and meant it more than she expected to. "Tell him I said hi anyway. Or don't. Up to you."

«No te preocupes», escribió, y lo dijo más en serio de lo que esperaba. «Dile que le mando saludos, si quieres. O no. Como prefieras».

"He doesn't really talk about you," Yusuf wrote back, with the blunt honesty only a much younger sibling could manage. "Sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear."

«En realidad no habla de ti», respondió Yusuf, con la franqueza directa que solo un hermano mucho menor puede permitirse. «Perdón si eso no es lo que querías oír».

It wasn't, particularly. But there was something almost restful in finally knowing, instead of turning the same three unanswerable questions over at midnight the way she had for six weeks straight. Soraya muted the notifications that night, not out of hurt, but because there was, at last, nothing left in them worth waiting up for.

No lo era, en realidad. Pero había algo casi reconfortante en saberlo por fin, en lugar de darle vueltas a las mismas tres preguntas sin respuesta cada medianoche, como había hecho durante seis semanas seguidas. Esa noche, Soraya silenció las notificaciones, no por dolor, sino porque, finalmente, ya no quedaba nada en ellas por lo cual valiera la pena quedarse despierta.
