The Three A.M. Notification

Soraya had stopped checking her phone for notifications from Marcus months ago, or she had told herself she had, which was not quite the same thing.

Soraya tinha parado de checar as notificações do celular à procura de coisas do Marcus fazia meses, ou pelo menos dizia isso a si mesma, o que não era exatamente a mesma coisa.

So when his name started appearing again, liking old posts from a year or more back, she noticed immediately, mostly because of the time. Every notification landed at almost exactly three in the morning, a photo from last spring, a caption she'd half forgotten writing, a comment on somebody else's post she'd been tagged in. It happened once a week at first, then twice, always at that same strange, sleepless hour.

Então, quando o nome dele começou a aparecer de novo, curtindo posts antigos de mais de um ano atrás, ela percebeu na hora, principalmente por causa do horário. Toda notificação chegava quase exatamente às três da manhã: uma foto da primavera passada, uma legenda que ela já tinha meio esquecido de ter escrito, um comentário em um post de outra pessoa em que ela tinha sido marcada. No começo acontecia uma vez por semana, depois duas, sempre naquela mesma hora estranha e sem sono.

Having spent the better part of a year convincing herself she was over him, Soraya found the notifications reopening a question she thought she'd closed. Was he thinking about her at three in the morning? Was this some elaborate, roundabout way of reaching out without the risk of an actual message?

Depois de passar boa parte de um ano se convencendo de que já tinha superado ele, Soraya percebeu que as notificações estavam reabrindo uma pergunta que ela achava ter encerrado. Será que ele pensava nela às três da manhã? Seria isso algum jeito elaborado e indireto de se aproximar sem correr o risco de mandar uma mensagem de verdade?

She mentioned it to her cousin, who was unimpressed. "People's thumbs do weird things at three a.m. It's not a signal. It's insomnia."

Ela comentou com a prima, que não se impressionou. "O dedo das pessoas faz coisas estranhas às três da manhã. Não é um sinal. É insônia."

Rarely had a single notification cost her so much sleep for so little evidence. Soraya wanted to believe her cousin and mostly didn't. After the sixth week of it, she finally sent a message, three words, deliberately light: "You're up late."

Raramente uma única notificação tinha custado tanto sono para tão pouca evidência. Soraya queria acreditar na prima e, na maior parte do tempo, não conseguia. Depois da sexta semana daquilo, ela finalmente mandou uma mensagem, três palavras, propositalmente leve: "Você está acordado até tarde."

The reply came almost immediately, which surprised her more than the message itself had. "This isn't Marcus, this is his brother Yusuf, he leaves his phone logged in on the family tablet and I use it for games at night lol. Didn't realize it was posting stuff, sorry."

A resposta veio quase na hora, o que a surpreendeu mais do que a própria mensagem tinha surpreendido. "Não é o Marcus, é o irmão dele, o Yusuf, ele deixa o celular logado no tablet da família e eu uso ele pra jogar de noite kkk. Nem percebi que estava postando coisa, desculpa."

Soraya read the message twice before it fully landed. What she had spent six weeks reading as a coded, careful gesture turned out to be nothing more than an eleven-year-old bored at three in the morning. He was thumbing through an app he barely understood the etiquette of.

Soraya leu a mensagem duas vezes antes de aquilo realmente entrar na cabeça. O que ela tinha passado seis semanas interpretando como um gesto codificado e cuidadoso não passava de um garoto de onze anos entediado às três da manhã. Ele estava mexendo em um aplicativo cuja etiqueta mal entendia.

"No worries," she typed back, and meant it more than she expected to. "Tell him I said hi anyway. Or don't. Up to you."

"Sem problema", ela respondeu, e sentiu mais aquilo do que esperava. "Diz pra ele que mandei um oi, se quiser. Ou não. Você decide."

"He doesn't really talk about you," Yusuf wrote back, with the blunt honesty only a much younger sibling could manage. "Sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear."

"Ele não fala muito sobre você não", Yusuf escreveu de volta, com a honestidade sem rodeios que só um irmão bem mais novo consegue ter. "Desculpa se não é isso que você queria ouvir."

It wasn't, particularly. But there was something almost restful in finally knowing, instead of turning the same three unanswerable questions over at midnight the way she had for six weeks straight. Soraya muted the notifications that night, not out of hurt, but because there was, at last, nothing left in them worth waiting up for.

Não era, para ser sincera. Mas havia algo quase reconfortante em finalmente saber, em vez de ficar remoendo as mesmas três perguntas sem resposta à meia-noite, como tinha feito durante seis semanas seguidas. Soraya silenciou as notificações naquela noite, não por mágoa, mas porque, finalmente, não havia mais nada nelas que valesse a pena ficar esperando.
