The Heat Off the Trailhead

Naledi noticed the two younger hikers before she noticed how far off the marked loop they'd wandered. By the time she'd worked out both problems together, the desert sun had already climbed past its gentler morning angle.

Naledi notó a los dos excursionistas más jóvenes antes de notar cuánto se habían desviado del circuito marcado. Para cuando logró entender ambos problemas juntos, el sol del desierto ya había pasado su ángulo más suave de la mañana.

Owen and Sable, both maybe twelve, had peeled off from their school group chasing a lizard nobody else had cared enough to follow. Naledi, seventeen and the only one nearby old enough to matter, found them nearly a mile off the loop trail. They were sunburned, out of water, and only now beginning to look frightened rather than delighted with themselves.

Owen y Sable, ambos de unos doce años, se habían apartado de su grupo escolar persiguiendo una lagartija que a nadie más le había importado seguir. Naledi, de diecisiete años y la única cerca con edad suficiente para que contara, los encontró a casi una milla del sendero circular. Estaban quemados por el sol, sin agua, y apenas empezaban a verse asustados en lugar de encantados con ellos mismos.

"We were going to go back," Sable said, in the defensive tone of someone who knew exactly how much trouble the sentence wasn't going to prevent.

Naledi didn't waste time on that argument. She had one liter of water left in her own bottle and roughly ninety minutes of hard walking between them and the trailhead, most of it in open sun with no shade worth mentioning. The math, run quickly in her head, did not comfortably support three people drinking freely from one liter.

Naledi no perdió tiempo con ese argumento. Le quedaba un litro de agua en su propia botella y unos noventa minutos de caminata difícil entre ellos y la entrada del sendero, la mayor parte al sol abierto sin sombra que valiera la pena mencionar. Las cuentas, hechas rápido en su cabeza, no permitían con comodidad que tres personas bebieran libremente de un litro.

What she decided, standing there doing that math, was not to explain any of it to two exhausted twelve-year-olds. Panic would only slow them down, and slow was the one thing none of them could afford in this heat.

"We're going to walk in short stretches," she told them, keeping her voice as ordinary as she could manage. "Ten minutes walking, two minutes resting in whatever shade we can find. Small sips only, not gulps. I'll tell you when."

She gave them water first, more than her share, rationing herself down to what she judged she could still function on. Had she drunk evenly with them from the start, she suspected, one of them would have run dry with forty minutes still to go, and there would have been nothing left to give.

Les dio agua primero, más de lo que le correspondía a ella, racionándose hasta lo mínimo con lo que calculaba que podría seguir funcionando. Sospechaba que, si hubiera bebido en partes iguales con ellos desde el principio, a uno de los dos se le habría acabado el agua con cuarenta minutos todavía por recorrer, y ya no habría quedado nada para darles.

The walk took just over an hour, longer than her estimate, because Sable's pace kept dropping and Naledi kept adjusting the rest stops to match rather than push her. By the time the trailhead sign came into view, Naledi's own mouth had gone dry enough that speaking took real effort.

La caminata tomó poco más de una hora, más de lo que había calculado, porque el ritmo de Sable seguía bajando y Naledi seguía ajustando las paradas para descansar en vez de presionarla. Para cuando apareció a la vista el letrero de la entrada del sendero, la boca de la propia Naledi estaba tan seca que hablar le costaba un esfuerzo real.

She handed both kids off to a ranger at the trailhead, mumbled something about a shortcut, and sat down hard in the shade of the ranger station before her legs decided the decision for her. Only once she was sitting did she let herself notice how badly her hands were shaking.
