The Younger Cousin

Josiah had been the reluctant babysitter for his cousin Pip since Pip was six, an arrangement neither of them had chosen and both had simply learned to live inside.

Josiah había sido el niñero reticente de su primo Pip desde que Pip tenía seis años, un arreglo que ninguno de los dos había elegido y con el que ambos simplemente habían aprendido a vivir.

Pip was fourteen now, old enough to resent supervision and clever enough to occasionally slip it. It was in exactly this newer, trickier phase that Josiah caught him packing a bag for a concert three towns over, one their aunt had explicitly forbidden.

Pip ya tenía catorce años, con la edad suficiente para resentir la supervisión y la astucia suficiente para escabullirse de ella de vez en cuando. Fue justo en esta etapa nueva y más complicada que Josiah lo descubrió empacando una bolsa para un concierto en un pueblo a tres localidades de distancia, uno que su tía había prohibido explícitamente.

"You can't tell her," Pip said, not quite pleading, though close to it. "I've been planning this for two months. I'll be back before anyone even notices."

«No puedes decirle», dijo Pip, sin llegar a rogar del todo, aunque cerca de eso. «Lo he estado planeando desde hace dos meses. Voy a volver antes de que nadie se dé cuenta».

Josiah recognized the plan immediately, not because it was clever but because he had run an almost identical version of it himself at fifteen. He had snuck out, once, to a show his own parents had banned, certain in exactly the way Pip now sounded that nothing would go wrong.

Josiah reconoció el plan de inmediato, no porque fuera astuto sino porque él mismo había hecho algo casi idéntico a los quince años. Una vez se había escapado a un concierto que sus propios padres habían prohibido, convencido, exactamente como sonaba Pip ahora, de que nada saldría mal.

It hadn't, in his case, gone entirely wrong. He had gotten home safely, if late. The only person who ever found out was his older cousin Adelina, who had covered for him without hesitation and never once mentioned it again, not even years later.

En su caso, no había salido del todo mal. Había llegado a casa a salvo, aunque tarde. La única persona que se enteró fue su prima mayor, Adelina, quien lo cubrió sin dudarlo y nunca volvió a mencionarlo, ni siquiera años después.

Had Adelina told his parents that night, Josiah suspected, his whole adolescence would have unfolded differently: watched more closely, trusted less. Those might have been fair reasons, but they would still have cost him something real.

Si Adelina les hubiera contado a sus padres esa noche, sospechaba Josiah, toda su adolescencia habría transcurrido de otra manera: más vigilado, con menos confianza. Esas razones tal vez habrían sido justas, pero de todos modos le habrían costado algo real.

Now, standing in Pip's doorway with the exact leverage Adelina once had, Josiah understood something for the first time. Her silence must have been far more complicated to choose than it had ever felt, at the time, simply to receive.

Ahora, parado en la puerta de Pip con exactamente el mismo poder que una vez tuvo Adelina, Josiah entendió algo por primera vez. Su silencio debió haber sido mucho más complicado de elegir de lo que, en su momento, se había sentido simplemente recibirlo.

"What if something happens?" Josiah asked, less as a threat than an honest question he genuinely didn't know the answer to.

"Then I guess I'll deal with it," Pip said. "Isn't that what you did?"

«Entonces supongo que me las arreglaré», dijo Pip. «¿No es eso lo que tú hiciste?»

Josiah had no clean response to that. Pip was not entirely wrong, and being right about that fact did not make the decision any easier to sit with.

Josiah no tenía una respuesta clara para eso. Pip no estaba del todo equivocado, y que tuviera razón en eso no hacía que la decisión fuera más fácil de sobrellevar.

What he had to weigh, standing there, was not really about the concert at all. It was about whether protecting Pip meant stopping him now, the way a more cautious mentor might have stopped Josiah. Or did it mean trusting him with the same imperfect freedom Adelina had once extended, on the same unspoken bet that Pip would come home fine?

Lo que tenía que sopesar, parado ahí, no tenía que ver realmente con el concierto. Se trataba de si proteger a Pip significaba detenerlo ahora, tal como un mentor más cauteloso podría haber detenido a Josiah. ¿O significaba confiarle la misma libertad imperfecta que Adelina le había dado una vez, con la misma apuesta silenciosa de que Pip volvería bien a casa?

He thought about Adelina's silence, which he had once received simply as kindness and only now, from the other side of it, recognized as a genuine risk she had taken on his behalf.

"Text me when you get there," Josiah finally said, "and when you leave. Both times. Or I tell her everything."

«Escríbeme cuando llegues», dijo finalmente Josiah, «y cuando te vayas. Las dos veces. O le cuento todo».

Pip agreed instantly, already halfway out the window. Josiah sat back down on the bed, phone in hand, and understood that he had just made Adelina's exact bet, with none of her certainty about how it would turn out.

Pip aceptó de inmediato, ya a medio camino por la ventana. Josiah se sentó de nuevo en la cama, teléfono en mano, y comprendió que acababa de hacer exactamente la misma apuesta que Adelina, pero sin ninguna de sus certezas sobre cómo terminaría.
