The radio crackled at twenty past six, just as Linnea was stacking the last of the washed mugs. Halvard, who ran the mountain hut, had gone down to the valley for supplies that morning, leaving her one instruction: if anyone called on channel six, she was to answer and stay inside. At the time it had sounded like a formality. Now, with fog pressed so close against the windows that she could barely make out the woodpile, it sounded like the only rule that mattered.
The voice belonged to a man who introduced himself as Teodor. He and his sister, Birgit, had crossed the ridge in clear weather an hour earlier, he explained, and had been following what they took to be the path down to the hut. Somewhere along the way the painted markers had stopped, and so, it seemed, had the path. "We're fine," he added quickly, in the tone of someone who was not entirely sure.
Linnea's first instinct was to grab her jacket and go looking for them. She knew the slopes around the hut better than almost anyone; she had spent three summers here. What she did not know, however, was where in two square kilometers of rock and fog they actually were, and a third lost person would help no one. Had Halvard been standing beside her, she suspected, he would have said exactly that, only more briefly.
So she spread the map across the table and started asking questions. What was under their feet: grass, loose stones, or bare rock? Could they hear running water, and if so, on which side? Birgit, who turned out to be the more observant of the two, described a boulder split cleanly down the middle, "like a book someone has left open." Linnea knew that boulder. It sat above the eastern stream, a good twenty minutes from the hut, and well to the left of where the path should have been.
What worried her was not the distance but the stream itself. Swollen from the afternoon's rain, it would be loud enough to drown out a shout, and slippery enough in the half-dark that someone could easily fall in. Rather than send them straight toward the hut, she told them to keep the water on their right and follow it downhill to a wooden footbridge. Under no circumstances, she added, were they to cross before reaching it.
Then she remembered the bell. It hung beside the door, a heavy old thing that Halvard rang at mealtimes mostly as a joke. Stepping out onto the porch, one step and no further, she pulled the rope hard and heard the sound roll away into the grey. Over the radio, a moment later, came Birgit's voice: "We heard that. It's ahead of us, a little to the left."
For the next half hour, Linnea rang the bell every minute and talked them down the slope between rings. Not once did she let the conversation go quiet for long; silence, she had learned, was when people started making their own decisions. They found the footbridge. They found the flat, muddy stretch beyond it. Finally, two headlamps appeared out of the fog, much closer than she had expected, and much lower.
Teodor reached the porch first, soaked to the knees, and looked up at the bell as though it had personally rescued him. "You could have just come and got us," he said.
«Podrías haber venido a buscarnos», dijo.
"I could have," Linnea said, holding the door open. "Then Halvard would be ringing this for three people instead of two."
