Matilda is forty years old. Today she has her first swimming lesson. She stands at the door of the pool. Her hands are cold.
Matilda tiene cuarenta años. Hoy tiene su primera clase de natación. Está parada en la puerta de la piscina. Tiene las manos frías.
She is afraid of deep water. She never learned to swim as a child.
Le tiene miedo al agua profunda. Nunca aprendió a nadar de niña.
Inside, six other people stand by the pool. They are adults too. A young teacher in a blue shirt waves. "Hello! Come in," she says.
Adentro, seis personas más están junto a la piscina. También son adultos. Una joven profesora con una camisa azul los saluda con la mano. «¡Hola! Pasen», dice.
A man next to Matilda says, "I am nervous too. I am fifty-five."
Un hombre junto a Matilda dice: «Yo también estoy nervioso. Tengo cincuenta y cinco años.»
A woman says, "Last week, I was scared. Now I like it."
Una mujer dice: «La semana pasada tenía miedo. Ahora me gusta.»
Matilda smiles a little. They sit and put their feet in the water. It is warm.
Matilda sonríe un poco. Se sientan y meten los pies en el agua. Está tibia.
"Today we only float," the teacher says. "Lie on your back and look at the roof."
«Hoy solo vamos a flotar», dice la profesora. «Acuéstense de espaldas y miren el techo.»
Matilda goes into the water. It comes up to her chest. She lies back. The teacher puts a hand under her head. The water covers her ears. Everything is quiet.
Matilda entra al agua. Le llega al pecho. Se recuesta hacia atrás. La profesora le pone una mano bajo la cabeza. El agua le cubre las orejas. Todo está en silencio.
"Breathe slowly," the teacher says. "I will take my hand away."
«Respire despacio», dice la profesora. «Voy a quitar mi mano.»
The hand goes. Matilda does not sink. She floats!
La mano se va. Matilda no se hunde. ¡Flota!
"You float!" the man says. Everyone claps.
«¡Está flotando!», dice el hombre. Todos aplauden.
Matilda looks at the roof and opens her arms wide.
Matilda mira el techo y abre los brazos de par en par.
