The Card on the Wrong Desk

Benji comes to class early. The room is empty. He has a small card in his hand.

Benji llega temprano a clase. El salón está vacío. Tiene una tarjeta pequeña en la mano.

He wants to give it to Jaya. He is too shy to say it with words. He does not write his name on the card.

Quiere dársela a Jaya. Le da demasiada vergüenza decírselo con palabras. No escribe su nombre en la tarjeta.

The card has a small drawing of a sun. Under it are four words. "You make Mondays better."

La tarjeta tiene un pequeño dibujo de un sol. Debajo hay cuatro palabras. «Haces mejores los lunes».

Benji walks to the desk by the window. He puts the card on it. His heart beats fast. He sits down.

Benji camina hasta el pupitre junto a la ventana. Pone la tarjeta encima. Su corazón late rápido. Se sienta.

Then the students come in. A tall boy sits at that desk. Benji's face goes cold. Jaya's desk is the one by the door. He made a mistake.

Entonces llegan los estudiantes. Un chico alto se sienta en ese pupitre. A Benji se le hiela la cara. El pupitre de Jaya es el que está junto a la puerta. Se equivocó.

The tall boy picks up the card. He reads it. He looks around the room with big eyes.

El chico alto toma la tarjeta. La lee. Mira alrededor del salón con los ojos muy abiertos.

Benji knows he must tell the truth. After class, he walks to the boy. "That card is not for you," he says quietly. "I am sorry. I used the wrong desk."

Benji sabe que debe decir la verdad. Después de clase, camina hacia el chico. «Esa tarjeta no es para ti», dice en voz baja. «Lo siento. Me equivoqué de pupitre».

The boy laughs, but not in a mean way. He gives the card back. "It is a nice card," he says. "Good luck."

El chico se ríe, pero no con mala intención. Le devuelve la tarjeta. «Es una tarjeta bonita», dice. «Buena suerte».

At lunch, Benji takes a new card from his bag. He draws the same sun. He writes the same words. This time he writes his name.

A la hora del almuerzo, Benji saca una tarjeta nueva de su mochila. Dibuja el mismo sol. Escribe las mismas palabras. Esta vez escribe su nombre.

After school, he walks to the desk by the door. He puts the card in Jaya's hand. She reads it twice. Then she smiles at him.

Después de la escuela, camina hasta el pupitre junto a la puerta. Le pone la tarjeta en la mano a Jaya. Ella la lee dos veces. Luego le sonríe.
