The Canoe That Drifted

Tao and Yuki paddle a canoe on a wide river. The morning starts clear and calm. Thick fog rolls in around midday. Soon, they cannot see the shore clearly. Their paddles dip quietly into the gray water.

Tao y Yuki reman una canoa en un río ancho. La mañana comienza despejada y tranquila. Una niebla espesa llega hacia el mediodía. Pronto, ya no pueden ver la orilla con claridad. Sus remos se hunden en silencio en el agua gris.

"We drifted off our usual path," Tao says. Yuki checks the small map in her bag.

«Nos desviamos de nuestra ruta habitual», dice Tao. Yuki revisa el pequeño mapa en su bolsa.

Two routes lead back to the dock. One route cuts straight through a narrow marsh. The other route follows the wide, open river.

Dos rutas llevan de vuelta al muelle. Una ruta atraviesa directamente un pantano angosto. La otra ruta sigue el río ancho y abierto.

"The marsh route looks quick," Tao says. "But the water there gets shallow and rocky."

«La ruta del pantano parece rápida», dice Tao. «Pero el agua ahí se vuelve poco profunda y llena de piedras».

"The river route takes more time," Yuki says. "It stays open and safe the whole way."

«La ruta del río toma más tiempo», dice Yuki. «Se mantiene abierta y segura todo el camino».

Tao thinks about the fog and the rocks. "Let's take the safe route," he finally says. Yuki nods and steers the canoe right.

Tao piensa en la niebla y en las piedras. «Tomemos la ruta segura», dice por fin. Yuki asiente y dirige la canoa hacia la derecha.

They paddle along the wide, open river. The fog slowly lifts around them. Sunlight breaks through in warm, soft patches.

Reman a lo largo del río ancho y abierto. La niebla se levanta poco a poco alrededor de ellos. La luz del sol se filtra en manchas cálidas y suaves.

After thirty minutes, the dock comes into view. Tao points at it and smiles with relief.

Después de treinta minutos, el muelle aparece a la vista. Tao lo señala y sonríe con alivio.

"Good choice," Yuki says. "We stayed dry and safe."

«Buena elección», dice Yuki. «Nos mantuvimos secos y a salvo».

They pull the canoe onto the sandy shore. Tao looks back toward the quiet, misty marsh. "Next time, with clear skies," he says. Yuki folds the small map and laughs softly. They carry the canoe up to the car together.

Sacan la canoa hasta la orilla arenosa. Tao mira hacia atrás, hacia el pantano tranquilo y brumoso. «La próxima vez, con cielo despejado», dice. Yuki dobla el pequeño mapa y se ríe suavemente. Juntos llevan la canoa hasta el auto.
