Tuli walked home late from basketball practice. The street was dark and quiet. Her bag was heavy.
Tuli voltou tarde para casa do treino de basquete. A rua estava escura e silenciosa. A mochila dela estava pesada.
She passed the school. The gate was shut, and the windows were dark. But Tuli heard music. Someone played a piano.
Ela passou pela escola. O portão estava fechado e as janelas estavam escuras. Mas Tuli ouviu música. Alguém tocava piano.
The song was slow and soft. It stopped. It started again. It stopped at the same place again.
A música era lenta e suave. Ela parou. Começou de novo. Parou no mesmo lugar outra vez.
Tuli stood still for a long time. Who was inside? Nobody was at school at this hour. She went home, but she could not sleep.
Tuli ficou parada por muito tempo. Quem estava lá dentro? Ninguém ficava na escola àquela hora. Ela foi para casa, mas não conseguiu dormir.
The next evening, Tuli went back. She came at the same time. The music started again.
Na noite seguinte, Tuli voltou. Chegou na mesma hora. A música começou de novo.
This time she walked to the side door. It was open a little. She looked inside.
Desta vez, ela foi até a porta lateral. Estava um pouco aberta. Ela olhou para dentro.
In the music room, the cleaner sat at the piano. His cart stood by the wall. He had a book of notes in front of him. He pressed the keys very slowly.
Na sala de música, o faxineiro estava sentado ao piano. O carrinho dele estava junto da parede. Ele tinha um livro de partituras à frente. Apertava as teclas bem devagar.
He made the same mistake again. He shook his head and tried again. Tuli did not move.
Ele cometeu o mesmo erro de novo. Balançou a cabeça e tentou outra vez. Tuli não se mexeu.
At last he played the whole song. It was beautiful. Tuli clapped her hands. The man jumped and then laughed.
Por fim, ele tocou a música inteira. Era linda. Tuli bateu palmas. O homem se assustou e depois riu.
"I clean this school," he said. "But I want to learn the piano."
"Eu limpo esta escola", disse ele. "Mas quero aprender piano."
"Please play it again," Tuli said. She sat down on the floor and listened.
"Por favor, toque de novo", disse Tuli. Ela se sentou no chão e ouviu.
