The Doorbell with No One There

The doorbell rings at Winnie's house almost every evening. She runs to open the door, but no one is there.

A campainha toca na casa da Winnie quase toda noite. Ela corre para abrir a porta, mas não há ninguém lá.

At first, Winnie thinks it is a game. She checks the street both ways, but it stays empty.

No começo, Winnie acha que é uma brincadeira. Ela olha a rua para os dois lados, mas continua vazia.

One evening, she decides to watch from the window instead. She waits by the glass and looks out at the porch.

Uma noite, ela decide observar pela janela. Ela espera perto do vidro e olha para a varanda.

A small brown puppy walks up the steps. It sniffs the doorbell button and jumps up against the door. Its paw hits the button, and the bell rings.

Um filhote de cachorro marrom pequeno sobe os degraus. Ele fareja o botão da campainha e pula contra a porta. Sua pata acerta o botão, e a campainha toca.

Winnie laughs and opens the door. The puppy wags its tail and looks up at her.

Winnie ri e abre a porta. O filhote balança o rabo e olha para ela.

A man walks up the path a moment later. "I'm sorry," he says. "This is my new puppy, Scout. He loves buttons."

Um homem sobe pelo caminho um momento depois. "Desculpe", ele diz. "Este é meu filhote novo, o Scout. Ele adora botões."

"That explains the doorbell," Winnie says. "It rang almost every night this week."

"Isso explica a campainha", diz Winnie. "Ela tocou quase toda noite esta semana."

"Jamal," the man says, and he holds out his hand. "We just moved in down the street."

"Jamal", diz o homem, estendendo a mão. "Acabamos de nos mudar para a rua ali."

"I'm Winnie," she says. "Scout can visit anytime, but maybe not the doorbell part."

"Eu sou a Winnie", ela diz. "O Scout pode visitar quando quiser, mas talvez não a parte da campainha."

Jamal laughs and picks up the puppy. "I'll walk him on a leash from now on," he says.

Jamal ri e pega o filhote no colo. "Vou passeá-lo com uma coleira a partir de agora", ele diz.

Winnie waves as they walk away. The porch stays quiet that night, and she almost misses the sound.

Winnie acena enquanto eles se afastam. A varanda fica quieta naquela noite, e ela quase sente falta do som.
