A new bike lane opened on Eleni's street in March. It was wide and painted green. Every morning she saw people ride past her window. She had an old bike in the hall. So she made a plan.
Sebuah jalur sepeda baru dibuka di jalan tempat tinggal Eleni pada bulan Maret. Jalur itu lebar dan dicat hijau. Setiap pagi ia melihat orang-orang bersepeda melewati jendelanya. Ia punya sepeda tua di lorong rumah. Maka ia membuat sebuah rencana.
For one week, she rode her bike to work. For the next week, she took the bus. She wrote notes on her phone every day.
Selama satu minggu, ia bersepeda ke tempat kerja. Pada minggu berikutnya, ia naik bus. Setiap hari ia menulis catatan di ponselnya.
In the first week, the weather was dry. The ride took twenty-five minutes. It cost nothing. She arrived at the office with red cheeks and plenty of energy. But on Thursday, her legs hurt a little.
Pada minggu pertama, cuaca kering. Perjalanannya memakan waktu dua puluh lima menit. Tidak ada biaya sama sekali. Ia tiba di kantor dengan pipi merah dan penuh tenaga. Tetapi pada hari Kamis, kakinya agak pegal.
In the second week, it rained on two days. The bus took thirty-five minutes because of the traffic. A ticket cost three euros each way, so she spent thirty euros. But she could read her book on the bus. Her shoes stayed dry. At work, she felt tired and slow.
Pada minggu kedua, hujan turun selama dua hari. Bus memakan waktu tiga puluh lima menit karena lalu lintas. Satu tiket harganya tiga euro sekali jalan, jadi ia menghabiskan tiga puluh euro. Tetapi ia bisa membaca bukunya di bus. Sepatunya tetap kering. Di kantor, ia merasa lelah dan lamban.
On Sunday, Eleni looked at her notes. The bike was faster and cheaper. The bus was better in the rain and easier for tired legs. She thought about it for a long time.
Pada hari Minggu, Eleni membaca catatannya. Sepeda lebih cepat dan lebih murah. Bus lebih baik saat hujan dan lebih mudah untuk kaki yang lelah. Ia memikirkannya lama sekali.
On Monday morning, she took her bike from the hall. She put on her helmet. She also put her bus card in her bag.
Pada Senin pagi, ia mengambil sepedanya dari lorong. Ia memakai helmnya. Ia juga memasukkan kartu busnya ke dalam tas.
"Bike when it is dry," she said to herself. "Bus when it rains."
"Sepeda kalau cuaca kering," katanya pada diri sendiri. "Bus kalau hujan."
Then she rode down the green lane in the morning sun.
Lalu ia mengayuh sepedanya menyusuri jalur hijau di bawah sinar matahari pagi.
