The Park Chess Mystery

Every evening, Soren walks past the stone chess table in the park on his way home from work. Someone always leaves one piece moved from the day before. At first, he barely notices, since the table sees plenty of casual players.

हर शाम सोरेन काम से घर लौटते समय पार्क में पत्थर की शतरंज की मेज़ के पास से गुज़रता है। कोई न कोई हमेशा पिछले दिन से एक मोहरा चला हुआ छोड़ जाता है। पहले तो उसका ध्यान शायद ही जाता है, क्योंकि उस मेज़ पर आम खिलाड़ी बहुत आते हैं।

But after a week, he realizes the moves form a real, careful game. Whoever is playing white moves once each evening, always before Soren arrives. He starts to wonder who has the patience for such a slow match. Soren learned chess from his grandfather as a boy, though he hasn't played anyone in years.

लेकिन एक हफ़्ते बाद उसे समझ आता है कि ये चालें एक असली, सोची-समझी बाज़ी बनाती हैं। जो भी सफ़ेद मोहरों से खेल रहा है, वह हर शाम एक बार चलता है, हमेशा सोरेन के पहुँचने से पहले। वह सोचने लगता है कि इतने धीमे मुक़ाबले के लिए किसके पास इतना सब्र है। सोरेन ने बचपन में अपने दादा से शतरंज सीखा था, हालाँकि उसने बरसों से किसी के साथ नहीं खेला।

One night, Soren decides to answer. He studies the board for ten minutes, then moves a black piece of his own. He isn't sure anyone will notice, but leaving the reply feels satisfying anyway. Walking home, he already finds himself thinking about his next move.

The next evening, white has moved again, faster than before, almost eagerly. The game continues like this for nearly three weeks, entirely in silence. Neither player has said a single word or left a note. Soren starts checking a chess app on his phone before each move. He wants to be sure he isn't missing anything obvious.

अगली शाम सफ़ेद ने फिर चाल चली है, पहले से तेज़, लगभग उत्सुकता से। बाज़ी लगभग तीन हफ़्ते तक इसी तरह चलती रहती है, पूरी तरह चुपचाप। दोनों खिलाड़ियों में से किसी ने एक शब्द नहीं कहा है और न कोई पर्ची छोड़ी है। सोरेन हर चाल से पहले अपने फ़ोन पर एक शतरंज ऐप देखने लगता है। वह पक्का करना चाहता है कि कोई साफ़ बात उसकी नज़र से छूट न रही हो।

By the final week, Soren's position looks strong, though the opponent still finds clever ways to survive. One evening, he arrives early and waits on a nearby bench instead of leaving right away. He wants, just once, to see who has played against him all this time.

आख़िरी हफ़्ते तक सोरेन की स्थिति मज़बूत दिखती है, हालाँकि विरोधी अब भी बचे रहने के चतुर तरीक़े ढूँढ लेता है। एक शाम वह जल्दी पहुँचता है और तुरंत जाने के बजाय पास की बेंच पर इंतज़ार करता है। वह, बस एक बार, देखना चाहता है कि इतने समय से उसके ख़िलाफ़ कौन खेलता रहा है।

An older man named Vance walks up, studies the board, then looks around and spots Soren watching. "You've gotten better since we started," Vance says with a grin. "I used to beat everyone at this table without trying." Soren laughs and finally sits down across from him to finish the game properly. He is already planning next week's rematch.
