The Crooked Door

Leona has been a carpenter for only a year. This is her first job without her boss standing behind her. An elderly woman needs a new door for her kitchen. The old one has stuck in its frame for as long as she can remember. Leona measures twice, cuts once, and sands the edges until they feel smooth as silk.

लियोना को बढ़ई का काम करते हुए सिर्फ़ एक साल हुआ है। यह उसका पहला काम है जिसमें उसके मालिक पीछे खड़े नहीं हैं। एक बुज़ुर्ग महिला को अपनी रसोई के लिए नया दरवाज़ा चाहिए। पुराना दरवाज़ा जब से उन्हें याद है, चौखट में अटकता आया है। लियोना दो बार नापती है, एक बार काटती है, और किनारों को तब तक रेतती है जब तक वे रेशम जैसे चिकने नहीं हो जाते।

By late afternoon the door hangs in the frame, and it looks beautiful. The wood is pale and warm, and the handle shines. The old woman has been sitting at the table with a cup of tea, watching quietly.

शाम ढलने तक दरवाज़ा चौखट में लग जाता है और बहुत सुंदर दिखता है। लकड़ी का रंग हल्का और गर्म है, और हैंडल चमक रहा है। बुज़ुर्ग महिला चाय का प्याला लिए मेज़ पर बैठी चुपचाप देखती रही हैं।

"It is lovely," she says. "Shall I close it?"

"यह तो बहुत प्यारा है," वे कहती हैं। "क्या मैं इसे बंद करूँ?"

Leona nods. But as the door swings shut, she hears a small scrape. The bottom corner catches the frame, and the door stops a finger's width before it closes. She pushes harder. It does not move.

Her stomach drops. She knows what has happened. One hinge sits a little too deep, and it pulls the door down. If she leaves now, she will be home by six, and the woman might never complain. It is only a small gap. Nobody would notice it from across the room.

उसका दिल बैठ जाता है। वह समझ जाती है कि क्या हुआ है। एक कब्ज़ा थोड़ा ज़्यादा गहरा लगा है, और वह दरवाज़े को नीचे खींच रहा है। अगर वह अभी निकल जाए, तो छह बजे तक घर पहुँच जाएगी, और हो सकता है महिला कभी शिकायत भी न करें। यह तो बस एक छोटी-सी दरार है। कमरे के दूसरे कोने से किसी को दिखेगी भी नहीं।

Then she remembers her boss, who always says that a job is finished when nobody notices the work. "I need two more hours," she tells the woman. "The door isn't right yet, and I want to fix it."

तभी उसे अपने मालिक की बात याद आती है, जो हमेशा कहते हैं कि काम तब पूरा होता है जब किसी को उसमें मेहनत दिखाई न दे। "मुझे दो घंटे और चाहिए," वह महिला से कहती है। "दरवाज़ा अभी ठीक नहीं है, और मैं इसे ठीक करना चाहती हूँ।"

"Take all the time you need," the woman says, and she pours Leona a cup of tea too.

"जितना समय चाहिए, ले लो," महिला कहती हैं, और लियोना के लिए भी एक प्याला चाय डाल देती हैं।

Leona lifts the door off its hinges. She moves the hinge plates and fills the old screw holes with little wooden pegs. Then she tests the fit again and again. Her hands shake a little at first. She planes a thin curl from the edge, then hangs the door once more.

लियोना दरवाज़े को कब्ज़ों से उतार लेती है। वह कब्ज़े की पट्टियाँ खिसकाती है और पुराने पेंच के छेदों को छोटी-छोटी लकड़ी की खूँटियों से भर देती है। फिर वह बार-बार नाप जाँचती है। शुरू में उसके हाथ थोड़े काँपते हैं। वह किनारे से रंदे की एक पतली लट उतारती है, और दरवाज़ा एक बार फिर लगा देती है।

This time it swings closed with a soft, solid click. The old woman laughs, opens it, and closes it three times, like a child with a new toy.

इस बार दरवाज़ा धीमी, पक्की "खट" की आवाज़ के साथ बंद होता है। बुज़ुर्ग महिला हँस पड़ती हैं, उसे खोलती हैं और तीन बार बंद करती हैं, किसी बच्चे की तरह जिसे नया खिलौना मिला हो।

"I watched you the whole time," she says. "Most people would have gone home. Three of my friends have doors that stick, you know. May I give them your number?"

"मैं पूरे समय तुम्हें देखती रही," वे कहती हैं। "ज़्यादातर लोग तो घर चले गए होते। जानती हो, मेरी तीन सहेलियों के दरवाज़े भी अटकते हैं। क्या मैं उन्हें तुम्हारा नंबर दे दूँ?"

Leona tears a page from her notebook, writes her number in big, clear digits, and hands it over.

लियोना अपनी नोटबुक से एक पन्ना फाड़ती है, उस पर अपना नंबर बड़े और साफ़ अंकों में लिखती है, और उन्हें थमा देती है।
