The Chalk Marks on the Driveway

Every morning, Xiomara found new chalk marks on the shared driveway. Numbers and letters covered the gray stone. They disappeared by the next afternoon.

हर सुबह शियोमारा को साझा ड्राइववे पर चॉक के नए निशान मिलते थे। अंक और अक्षर भूरे पत्थर पर फैले होते थे। अगली दोपहर तक वे ग़ायब हो जाते थे।

At first, she thought the rain washed them away. But some mornings were dry, and the marks still vanished.

पहले उसने सोचा कि बारिश उन्हें धो देती है। लेकिन कुछ सुबहें सूखी होती थीं, फिर भी निशान मिट जाते थे।

One Saturday, Xiomara decided to check early, before school. She walked outside at seven. A small boy sat on the driveway with a box of chalk.

एक शनिवार शियोमारा ने स्कूल से पहले सुबह-सुबह देखने का फ़ैसला किया। वह सात बजे बाहर गई। एक छोटा लड़का चॉक का डिब्बा लिए ड्राइववे पर बैठा था।

"Good morning," she said. "Are you the person with all these chalk numbers?"

"गुड मॉर्निंग," उसने कहा। "क्या तुम ही चॉक से ये सारे अंक लिखते हो?"

The boy looked up, a little shy. "I'm Rio," he said. "I practice my numbers before school. My mom washes the driveway every afternoon."

लड़के ने ऊपर देखा, थोड़ा शर्माते हुए। "मैं रियो हूँ," उसने कहा। "मैं स्कूल से पहले अपने अंकों की प्रैक्टिस करता हूँ। मेरी मम्मी हर दोपहर ड्राइववे को धो देती हैं।"

"That explains it," Xiomara said. She sat down next to him. "Can I see your numbers?"

"तो यह बात है," शियोमारा ने कहा। वह उसके पास बैठ गई। "क्या मैं तुम्हारे अंक देख सकती हूँ?"

Rio showed her rows of numbers, from one to twenty. They looked a little crooked but clear.

रियो ने उसे एक से बीस तक अंकों की कतारें दिखाईं। वे थोड़े टेढ़े थे, पर साफ़ थे।

"These are good," Xiomara said. "Do you want help with the next ten?"

"ये अच्छे हैं," शियोमारा ने कहा। "क्या तुम्हें अगले दस में मदद चाहिए?"

Rio nodded and handed her a piece of chalk. They sat together and wrote numbers all the way to fifty.

रियो ने सिर हिलाया और उसे एक चॉक थमा दी। वे साथ बैठकर पचास तक अंक लिखते चले गए।

The next morning, new marks covered the driveway again. Numbers from one to fifty looked neat and proud.

अगली सुबह ड्राइववे पर फिर से नए निशान फैले थे। एक से पचास तक के अंक साफ़-सुथरे और गर्व से भरे लग रहे थे।

Xiomara smiled when she saw them on her way to school.

स्कूल जाते समय उन्हें देखकर शियोमारा मुस्कुरा दी।
