Selene shops for a birthday gift at the mall. The store is busy on a Saturday afternoon. She picks out a soft blue sweater.
Selene va de compras a un centro comercial para buscar un regalo de cumpleaños. La tienda está llena un sábado por la tarde. Ella elige un suave suéter azul.
She also grabs a small candle near the register. At the self-checkout, she scans the candle first. She holds up the sweater next.
También toma una vela pequeña cerca de la caja. En el autoservicio de pago, escanea primero la vela. Después levanta el suéter.
The tag hangs inside a fold of fabric. She scans it, or thinks she does. The screen shows only one item.
La etiqueta cuelga dentro de un doblez de la tela. Ella la escanea, o cree que lo hace. La pantalla muestra solo un artículo.
Selene pays for the candle and bags both items. She does not check the screen twice. She walks out to her car.

She drives home and stops at a red light. She checks her receipt at the light. Only one item is listed on it.

Selene realizes the mistake right away. She feels a little nervous. She turns her car around at the next light.
Selene se da cuenta del error de inmediato. Se siente un poco nerviosa. Da la vuelta con el auto en el siguiente semáforo.
She drives back to the store. She walks up to the service desk. A worker greets her with a smile.
Regresa manejando a la tienda. Camina hasta el mostrador de servicio al cliente. Una trabajadora la recibe con una sonrisa.
"I did not pay for this sweater," Selene says. She points to the item in her bag. The worker checks her receipt carefully.
«No pagué por este suéter», dice Selene. Señala el artículo en su bolsa. La trabajadora revisa su recibo con cuidado.
"You're right," the worker says kindly. "Let's fix that now." Selene pays the missing amount.
«Tiene razón», dice la trabajadora amablemente. «Vamos a arreglarlo ahora mismo». Selene paga el monto que falta.
She thanks the worker and leaves again. This time, she checks her receipt twice. Everything on it looks correct.
Le da las gracias a la trabajadora y sale de nuevo. Esta vez, revisa su recibo dos veces. Todo en él se ve correcto.
