The Surprise Party Plan

Nico, Carmen, and Otto are planning a surprise party for their friend Sasha's sixteenth birthday. They have exactly one week and three different ideas. As it turns out, they have almost no ability to agree on anything.

Nico, Carmen y Otto están planeando una fiesta sorpresa para el cumpleaños número dieciséis de su amiga Sasha. Tienen exactamente una semana y tres ideas distintas. Resulta que casi no logran ponerse de acuerdo en nada.

Nico wants to rent the community center and invite half their grade. Carmen thinks a big crowd would embarrass Sasha, who hates being the center of attention. Otto just wants pizza and a good playlist, and doesn't understand why this needs a committee at all.

Nico quiere alquilar el centro comunitario e invitar a la mitad del curso. Carmen piensa que una multitud avergonzaría a Sasha, que odia ser el centro de atención. Otto solo quiere pizza y una buena lista de música, y no entiende por qué esto necesita un comité.

"Fine," Carmen says, "let's compromise. Small group, but somewhere that feels special."

They settle on Otto's backyard, since his parents have already agreed to it. The plan seems simple: decorations, a cake, and a banner that says "Happy Birthday" in giant letters.

Then things start going wrong, one small disaster at a time.

The banner Carmen ordered online arrives two days late. When it finally shows up, it reads "Happy Birthday, Sarah" instead of "Sasha." Nico had typed the order form too quickly. Otto tries to fix it with a marker, but the correction is obvious from across the yard.

Two days before the party, the bakery calls to say they're out of chocolate cake, Sasha's favorite. Carmen spends an entire evening searching for a replacement. She ends up ordering the only cake the shop can finish in time. It says, "Congratulations on Your Retirement."

"We'll just… not read that part out loud," Nico says, staring at the cake box.

On the day of the party, it starts raining exactly one hour before guests arrive. Otto's backyard plan suddenly looks like a serious mistake. They scramble to move everything into the garage instead. They carry chairs and string lights through the rain, trying not to look panicked.

Sasha finally arrives, expecting a quiet dinner with her family. Instead, she walks into a garage full of soaked decorations. There's a misspelled banner someone has tried to fix with marker. And there's a cake congratulating her on a retirement she hasn't had. For a moment, nobody says anything.

Then Sasha starts laughing, so hard she has to sit down on a folding chair. "This is the best party I've ever been to," she says, still laughing. "Please tell me somebody has a picture of that cake."
