The Borrowed Ladder

Amina lends her neighbor a ladder and helps him clean his gutter before the rain.

Amina hears a knock on her door. Her neighbor stands outside, looking worried. "Can I borrow your ladder?" he asks.
Amina oye que llaman a su puerta. Su vecino está afuera, con cara de preocupación. «¿Me prestas tu escalera?», pregunta.
"My gutter is full of leaves," he explains. "I want to clean it before the rain." Amina brings her tall ladder outside.
«Mi canaleta está llena de hojas», explica. «Quiero limpiarla antes de que llueva». Amina saca su escalera alta afuera.
She carries it to his front yard. The ladder is heavy but not too big. She sets it against the wall carefully.
La lleva hasta el jardín delantero de él. La escalera es pesada pero no muy grande. La coloca con cuidado contra la pared.
"Do you need help holding it?" she offers. He nods and thanks her kindly. Amina holds the ladder steady at the bottom.
«¿Necesitas ayuda para sostenerla?», ofrece ella. Él asiente y le da las gracias amablemente. Amina sostiene la escalera firme por abajo.
Her neighbor climbs up carefully with a bucket. He pulls out wet leaves and sticks. Some leaves fall right onto the grass.
Su vecino sube con cuidado, con una cubeta. Saca hojas mojadas y ramitas. Algunas hojas caen justo sobre el pasto.
"This is a lot of leaves," he says. Amina laughs and hands him a bag. He fills the bag slowly and carefully.
«Hay muchísimas hojas», dice él. Amina se ríe y le pasa una bolsa. Él llena la bolsa despacio y con cuidado.
Birds fly out from a nearby tree. The afternoon sun feels warm on their backs. Amina checks her phone for the time.
Unos pájaros salen volando de un árbol cercano. El sol de la tarde se siente cálido en la espalda de ambos. Amina revisa la hora en su celular.
After twenty minutes, the gutter is clean. Her neighbor climbs down safely. "Thank you so much for your help," he says.
Después de veinte minutos, la canaleta está limpia. Su vecino baja sin problemas. «Muchas gracias por tu ayuda», dice.
Amina smiles and picks up her ladder. She carries it back to her garage. Helping a neighbor felt like a good morning.
Amina sonríe y toma su escalera. La lleva de vuelta a su garaje. Ayudar a un vecino se sintió como una buena mañana.
