The Books She Dropped on the Stairs

Selin drops a stack of books on the office stairs, and a stranger's help turns into a new friendship.

Selin carries a tall stack of books down the office stairs. On the fourth step, the stack slips. Books fall in every direction.
Selin lleva una pila alta de libros por las escaleras de la oficina. En el cuarto escalón, la pila se resbala. Los libros caen en todas direcciones.
"Oh no," she says, and kneels down to gather them.
«Oh, no», dice ella, y se agacha a recogerlos.
A man on the stairs below stops and turns around. "Let me help," he says. He picks up three books and hands them back to her.
Un hombre en las escaleras de abajo se detiene y se voltea. «Déjame ayudarte», dice. Recoge tres libros y se los entrega.
"Thank you," Selin says. "I always carry too many at once."
«Gracias», dice Selin. «Siempre cargo demasiados a la vez».
"I do the same with coffee cups," he says. "My name is Gabriel."
«Yo hago lo mismo con las tazas de café», dice él. «Me llamo Gabriel».
"Selin," she says. "I work on the third floor."
«Selin», dice ella. «Trabajo en el tercer piso».
"I'm on the fifth," Gabriel says. "I never come down this way. But today I took the stairs instead."
«Yo estoy en el quinto», dice Gabriel. «Nunca bajo por aquí. Pero hoy tomé las escaleras».
They carry the books together to Selin's office door.
Llevan los libros juntos hasta la puerta de la oficina de Selin.
"Thanks again," she says. "You saved me a lot of time."
«Gracias otra vez», dice ella. «Me ahorraste mucho tiempo».
"Anytime," Gabriel says. He starts to walk back toward the stairs, then stops. "Maybe I'll start taking the stairs every day," he says.
«Cuando quieras», dice Gabriel. Empieza a caminar de vuelta hacia las escaleras, y luego se detiene. «Tal vez empiece a tomar las escaleras todos los días», dice.
The next week, Selin sees Gabriel on the stairs again. This time, he carries his own stack of papers. She smiles and holds the door open for him.

"Let's start a stair club," she jokes.

Gabriel laughs. "I'm in," he says, and they walk down together.
