A new servant must learn a whole household of ridiculous private names for everyday things, then remember them all in an emergency.
A girl once went to the fair to hire herself for servant. At last a funny-looking old gentleman engaged her, and took her home to his house. When she got there, he told her that he had something to teach her, for that in his house he had his own names for things.
Una vez una muchacha fue a la feria a contratarse como sirvienta. Al fin un señor de aspecto curioso la contrató, y se la llevó a su casa. Cuando llegó allí, le dijo que tenía algo que enseñarle, pues en su casa tenía sus propios nombres para las cosas.
He said to her: “What will you call me?”
Él le dijo: «¿Cómo me llamarás a mí?»
“Master or mister, or whatever you please sir,” says she.
«Amo o señor, o lo que usted guste, señor,» dijo ella.
He said: “You must call me 'master of all masters.' And what would you call this?” pointing to his bed.
Él dijo: «Debes llamarme "amo de todos los amos." ¿Y cómo llamarías a esto?» señalando su cama.
“Bed or couch, or whatever you please, sir.”
«Cama o lecho, o lo que usted guste, señor.»
“No, that's my 'barnacle.' And what do you call these?” said he pointing to his pantaloons.
«No, eso es mi "percebe." ¿Y cómo llamas a esto?» dijo él señalando sus pantalones.
“Breeches or trousers, or whatever you please, sir.”
«Calzones o pantalones, o lo que usted guste, señor.»
“You must call them 'squibs and crackers.' And what would you call her?” pointing to the cat.
«Debes llamarlos "petardos y cohetes." ¿Y cómo llamarías a ella?» señalando a la gata.
“Cat or kit, or whatever you please, sir.”
«Gata o gatita, o lo que usted guste, señor.»
“You must call her 'white-faced simminy.' And this now,” showing the fire, “what would you call this?”
«Debes llamarla "carifina de cara blanca." ¿Y esto ahora?» dijo, mostrando el fuego, «¿cómo llamarías a esto?»
“Fire or flame, or whatever you please, sir.”
«Fuego o llama, o lo que usted guste, señor.»
“You must call it 'hot cockalorum,' and what this?” he went on, pointing to the water.
«Debes llamarlo "candelorum ardiente," ¿y esto?» continuó, señalando el agua.
“Water or wet, or whatever you please, sir.”
«Agua o líquido, o lo que usted guste, señor.»
“No, 'pondalorum' is its name. And what do you call all this?” asked he, as he pointed to the house.
«No, "pondalorum" es su nombre. ¿Y cómo llamas a todo esto?» preguntó él, señalando la casa.
“House or cottage, or whatever you please, sir.”
«Casa o cabaña, o lo que usted guste, señor.»
“You must call it 'high topper mountain.'”
«Debes llamarla "alta cima montaña."»
That very night the servant woke her master up in a fright and said: “Master of all masters, get out of your barnacle and put on your squibs and crackers. For white-faced simminy has got a spark of hot cockalorum on its tail, and unless you get some pondalorum high topper mountain will be all on hot cockalorum.” … That's all.
Esa misma noche la sirvienta despertó a su amo asustada y dijo: «Amo de todos los amos, sal de tu percebe y ponte tus petardos y cohetes. Pues la carifina de cara blanca tiene una chispa de candelorum ardiente en la cola, y a menos que consigas algo de pondalorum, la alta cima montaña quedará toda en candelorum ardiente.» … Eso es todo.
