The Horse That Stopped at the Creek

Nolan rides horses at the ranch every summer. He knows the trails well and helps new riders when they visit.

Nolan monta a cavalo no rancho todos os verões. Ele conhece bem as trilhas e ajuda os cavaleiros iniciantes quando eles visitam o lugar.

Today, a new rider named Estelle joins the group. It is her first time on a horse. She holds the reins tightly and sits very straight.

Hoje, uma nova cavaleira chamada Estelle se junta ao grupo. É a primeira vez dela em cima de um cavalo. Ela segura as rédeas com força e senta bem ereta.

The group rides up the hill and through the pine trees. Estelle's horse is a gentle brown mare named Juniper. She follows the other horses without trouble.

O grupo sobe a colina e atravessa o pinheiral. O cavalo de Estelle é uma égua marrom e dócil chamada Juniper. Ela segue os outros cavalos sem problemas.

Then the trail reaches a small creek. Water moves quickly over flat gray stones. The other horses walk through it one by one.

Então a trilha chega a um pequeno riacho. A água corre depressa sobre pedras cinzentas e planas. Os outros cavalos atravessam, um de cada vez.

Juniper stops at the edge of the water. She lifts her head and does not move forward.

Juniper para na beira da água. Ela levanta a cabeça e não avança.

"Come on, girl," Estelle says softly, but Juniper stays still.

"Vamos, garota", diz Estelle baixinho, mas Juniper continua parada.

Nolan turns his horse around and rides back to her. "This happens sometimes," he says. "Horses don't like the sound of moving water at first."

Nolan vira o cavalo e volta até ela. "Isso acontece às vezes", ele diz. "No começo, os cavalos não gostam do barulho da água correndo."

"What do I do?" Estelle asks, a little worried.

"O que eu faço?", pergunta Estelle, um pouco preocupada.

"Stay calm and loose in the saddle," Nolan says. "Let her look at the water for a minute. Don't pull on the reins."

"Fique calma e relaxada na sela", diz Nolan. "Deixe ela olhar a água por um minuto. Não puxe as rédeas."

Estelle takes a slow breath and relaxes her hands. Juniper lowers her head and sniffs at the water.

Estelle respira fundo devagar e relaxa as mãos. Juniper abaixa a cabeça e cheira a água.

After a minute, Juniper takes one small step, then another. Soon she walks steadily through the creek behind the other horses.

Depois de um minuto, Juniper dá um pequeno passo, depois outro. Logo ela atravessa o riacho com passos firmes, atrás dos outros cavalos.

"You did it!" Nolan says, smiling.

"Você conseguiu!", diz Nolan, sorrindo.

Estelle laughs with relief and pats Juniper's neck. "We did it together," she says. They ride on toward the top of the hill.

Estelle ri, aliviada, e dá tapinhas no pescoço de Juniper. "A gente conseguiu juntas", ela diz. Elas seguem cavalgando rumo ao topo da colina.
