The Family Photo Fiasco

Petra has been planning the family photo for three weeks. It all started when her mother suggested it at Sunday dinner. "Something simple," her mother said. "Just everyone together, for once."

Petra vem planejando a foto de família há três semanas. Tudo começou quando a mãe dela sugeriu isso no jantar de domingo. "Algo simples", disse a mãe. "Só todo mundo junto, pelo menos uma vez."

Simple, it turns out, is not the right word for this family. There are nine people, two dogs, and a photographer who charges by the hour.

Simples, aliás, não é a palavra certa para essa família. São nove pessoas, dois cachorros e um fotógrafo que cobra por hora.

The first attempt happens in the backyard, everyone dressed in matching cream and beige. It's an idea Petra regrets almost immediately. Her husband Roman keeps blinking at exactly the wrong moment. It doesn't matter how many times the photographer counts down. Their son Enzo, who is four, has decided that smiling means showing every tooth he has. That includes several teeth that are still growing in sideways.

A primeira tentativa acontece no quintal, todos vestidos em tons combinando de creme e bege. É uma ideia da qual Petra se arrepende quase na hora. Seu marido, Roman, fica piscando bem no momento errado. Não importa quantas vezes o fotógrafo faça a contagem. O filho deles, Enzo, que tem quatro anos, decidiu que sorrir significa mostrar cada dente que tem. Isso inclui vários dentes que ainda estão nascendo tortos.

"Enzo, a normal smile, please," Petra says, for what feels like the tenth time.

"Enzo, um sorriso normal, por favor", diz Petra, pela que parece ser a décima vez.

"This is my normal smile," Enzo says, offended.

Meanwhile, their daughter Cleo has brought one of the dogs into the shot without telling anyone. The dog decides this is the perfect moment to shake off. It sends dirt across three people's outfits.

They try again after cleaning up, but by then the light has changed. Everyone looks slightly washed out. The photographer suggests moving to the living room instead, where at least the lighting stays consistent.

Eles tentam de novo depois de se limparem, mas, a essa altura, a luz já mudou. Todo mundo parece meio sem cor. O fotógrafo sugere ir para a sala de estar, onde pelo menos a iluminação fica constante.

Indoors, a new problem appears. Petra's mother refuses to remove her sunhat, insisting it's "part of her look now." Roman, who has stopped blinking, has started making a strange face instead. He swears it's neutral, but in every photo it reads as deeply suspicious.

Dentro de casa, surge um novo problema. A mãe de Petra se recusa a tirar o chapéu de sol, insistindo que ele agora "faz parte do visual dela". Roman, que parou de piscar, começou a fazer uma cara estranha no lugar disso. Ele jura que é uma expressão neutra, mas em todas as fotos parece profundamente desconfiado.

By the fifth attempt, Petra has stopped trying to control every detail. She just tells everyone to stand together and do whatever feels natural. Enzo shows his teeth again. Cleo lets the dog back in, dirt and all. Her mother keeps the sunhat. Roman looks vaguely alarmed.

Na quinta tentativa, Petra desiste de tentar controlar cada detalhe. Ela só pede que todos fiquem juntos e façam o que for mais natural. Enzo mostra os dentes de novo. Cleo deixa o cachorro voltar, terra e tudo. A mãe dela mantém o chapéu de sol. Roman parece vagamente alarmado.

When the photos come back a week later, the "perfect" version from the backyard looks stiff and posed. But the chaotic living room photo, hat, dog, teeth, and all, is different. It's the one Petra frames and puts on the wall.

Quando as fotos chegam, uma semana depois, a versão "perfeita" do quintal parece rígida e artificial. Mas a foto caótica da sala de estar, com chapéu, cachorro, dentes e tudo mais, é diferente. É essa que Petra emoldura e pendura na parede.
