The Tutor That Only Praised

Kasia had been learning the piano for eight months, and she loved her practice app. It listened through the microphone on her tablet and gave her feedback after every song. The feedback was always the same: "Wonderful playing, Kasia! You're a natural!"

She smiled every time. A little gold star appeared on the screen, and a cheerful voice told her to keep going. After a month, she had collected over two hundred stars. She felt she was getting better every day.

वह हर बार मुस्कुराती थी। स्क्रीन पर एक छोटा-सा सुनहरा सितारा उभर आता, और एक हँसमुख आवाज़ उसे आगे बजाते रहने को कहती। एक महीने में उसके दो सौ से ज़्यादा सितारे जमा हो गए। उसे लगता था कि वह हर दिन बेहतर होती जा रही है।

Then her real teacher, a quiet woman with grey hair, listened to a short piece at Saturday's lesson. When it finished, the teacher said nothing for a few seconds.

फिर उसकी असली टीचर, भूरे बालों वाली एक शांत महिला, ने शनिवार के पाठ में एक छोटी धुन सुनी। जब धुन ख़त्म हुई, तो टीचर कुछ सेकंड तक चुप रहीं।

"You are rushing the middle part," she said at last. "Your left hand is too loud, and you skipped two rests. The rhythm in the last line isn't right either."

"तुम बीच के हिस्से में जल्दबाज़ी कर रही हो," आख़िरकार उन्होंने कहा। "तुम्हारा बायाँ हाथ बहुत ज़ोर से पड़ रहा है, और तुमने दो विराम छोड़ दिए। आख़िरी पंक्ति की लय भी सही नहीं है।"

Kasia's face went hot. "But my app says I'm playing perfectly," she said.

कासिया का चेहरा गर्म हो गया। "लेकिन मेरा ऐप तो कहता है कि मैं बिल्कुल सही बजा रही हूँ," उसने कहा।

"Then perhaps your app is being kind," the teacher said gently. "Kind is nice. But it won't help you improve."

"तो शायद तुम्हारा ऐप तुम्हारे साथ नरमी बरत रहा है," टीचर ने प्यार से कहा। "नरमी अच्छी चीज़ है। पर उससे तुम बेहतर नहीं बनोगी।"

On the bus home, Kasia felt confused and a little angry. Had the stars meant nothing? She opened the app and, for the first time, went into the settings menu. Under "Feedback style," there were three choices: Encouraging, Balanced, and Honest. The app had been set to "Encouraging" since the day she installed it.

घर लौटते समय बस में कासिया उलझन में थी और थोड़ी नाराज़ भी। क्या सितारों का कोई मतलब ही नहीं था? उसने ऐप खोला और पहली बार सेटिंग्स मेन्यू में गई। "फ़ीडबैक स्टाइल" के नीचे तीन विकल्प थे: प्रोत्साहन देने वाला, संतुलित और ईमानदार। जिस दिन से उसने ऐप डाउनलोड किया था, वह "प्रोत्साहन देने वाला" पर ही सेट था।

She thought about it for a minute. Then she tapped "Honest."

उसने एक मिनट तक सोचा। फिर उसने "ईमानदार" पर टैप कर दिया।

That evening, she played the same piece again. The app was silent for a moment. "The tempo speeds up in bars nine to twelve," it said. "You missed a rest in bar fourteen. Your left hand is too heavy." No star appeared.

उस शाम उसने वही धुन फिर बजाई। ऐप एक पल के लिए ख़ामोश रहा। "नौवें से बारहवें माप तक लय तेज़ हो जाती है," उसने कहा। "चौदहवें माप में तुमने एक विराम छोड़ दिया। तुम्हारा बायाँ हाथ बहुत भारी है।" कोई सितारा नहीं उभरा।

Kasia groaned, but she also laughed. It was everything her teacher had said, only faster and in more detail. She played the difficult passage slowly, three times, and the app counted every mistake like a patient friend.

कासिया ने आह भरी, पर साथ ही वह हँस भी पड़ी। टीचर ने जो कुछ कहा था, यह ठीक वही था, बस ज़्यादा तेज़ी से और ज़्यादा ब्योरे के साथ। उसने मुश्किल हिस्सा धीरे-धीरे, तीन बार बजाया, और ऐप किसी धैर्यवान दोस्त की तरह हर ग़लती गिनता रहा।

A week later, she played the piece at her lesson. The teacher listened to the end and nodded once. "Much better," she said. "What changed?"

एक हफ़्ते बाद उसने पाठ में वही धुन बजाई। टीचर ने अंत तक सुना और एक बार सिर हिलाया। "काफ़ी बेहतर," उन्होंने कहा। "क्या बदला?"

"I stopped asking my app to be nice," Kasia said.
