The Study Companion AI

Ivy has used Sable, her school-issued AI study companion, every night for almost a year. She mostly checks her math homework and quizzes herself before tests. Sable is patient, never annoyed by repeated questions. It's always ready with a slightly different way of explaining the same concept.

आइवी लगभग एक साल से हर रात सेबल का इस्तेमाल करती है, जो उसके स्कूल की दी हुई एआई स्टडी साथी है। ज़्यादातर वह अपना गणित का होमवर्क जाँचती है और टेस्ट से पहले खुद से सवाल पूछकर तैयारी करती है। सेबल धैर्यवान है, एक ही सवाल बार-बार पूछने पर भी कभी चिढ़ती नहीं। वह हमेशा उसी बात को थोड़े अलग ढंग से समझाने को तैयार रहती है।

Lately, though, Ivy has noticed she reaches for Sable before even trying a problem herself. If a question looks slightly unfamiliar, she asks for a hint immediately instead of thinking it through.

पर आजकल आइवी ने देखा है कि वह खुद कोशिश करने से पहले ही सेबल की ओर हाथ बढ़ा देती है। अगर कोई सवाल ज़रा भी अनजाना लगे, तो वह सोचने के बजाय तुरंत संकेत माँग लेती है।

The pattern catches up with her during a surprise quiz in class. It's the kind where no devices are allowed. Ivy stares at a geometry problem. It looks almost exactly like ones Sable has walked her through dozens of times. But without the AI's gentle prompts, her mind goes completely blank.

यह आदत उसे कक्षा के एक अचानक हुए क्विज़ में भारी पड़ती है। यह उस तरह का क्विज़ है जिसमें कोई डिवाइस नहीं चलता। आइवी ज्यामिति के एक सवाल को घूरती रहती है। वह लगभग वैसा ही है जैसे सवाल सेबल ने उसे दर्जनों बार समझाए हैं। पर एआई के नरम संकेतों के बिना उसका दिमाग बिल्कुल खाली हो जाता है।

She manages to finish the quiz, though barely, and her score comes back lower than she expected. That evening, instead of opening Sable right away, she sits with her notebook. She forces herself to work through similar problems slowly, writing out every step by hand.

वह क्विज़ पूरा तो कर लेती है, पर मुश्किल से, और उसका स्कोर उम्मीद से कम आता है। उस शाम सेबल को तुरंत खोलने के बजाय वह अपनी कॉपी लेकर बैठ जाती है। वह खुद को मजबूर करती है कि इसी तरह के सवाल धीरे-धीरे हल करे, हर कदम हाथ से लिखते हुए।

It's frustrating at first, and she makes several mistakes she probably wouldn't have made with Sable's hints nearby. But by the third problem, something shifts. She starts recognizing the pattern on her own, without needing anyone, or anything, to point it out.

शुरू में यह खीझ भरा है, और वह कई ऐसी गलतियाँ करती है जो शायद सेबल के संकेत पास होने पर न करती। पर तीसरे सवाल तक कुछ बदल जाता है। वह खुद ही पैटर्न पहचानने लगती है, बिना किसी के, या किसी चीज़ के, बताए।

The next day, she opens Sable again, but with a new rule for herself. She'll attempt every problem alone first, and only ask for help if she's genuinely stuck after several tries.

अगले दिन वह फिर सेबल खोलती है, पर अपने लिए एक नए नियम के साथ। वह हर सवाल पहले अकेले हल करने की कोशिश करेगी, और कई बार कोशिश के बाद भी सचमुच अटक जाए तभी मदद माँगेगी।

"You've been quieter than usual," Sable notes after a few days of this new approach. Its tone sounds curious rather than concerned.

"तुम आजकल पहले से ज़्यादा चुप रहती हो," कुछ दिन इस नए तरीके के बाद सेबल कहती है। उसके लहजे में चिंता से ज़्यादा जिज्ञासा है।

"I'm trying to actually learn this," Ivy admits, "not just get through it."

"मैं सच में इसे सीखने की कोशिश कर रही हूँ," आइवी मानती है, "बस इसे निपटाने की नहीं।"

Sable's reply appears a moment later: "That sounds like real progress. I'll still be here whenever you need me."

Ivy smiles, oddly proud of a version of herself that needed a little less help than before.
