The Smart Home Surprise

Bea's family installed a smart home system last spring. It has slowly learned everyone's routines. It knows when to turn the lights on and what temperature her dad likes in the evening. It even knows which playlist her mom prefers while cooking dinner. Most of the time, Bea barely notices it working in the background.

One Saturday, though, she wakes up to find her bedroom light already on. It's set to a soft orange glow instead of the usual bright white. Confused, she checks the home app on her phone. She finds a new automation she never created: "Wake gently — weekends, 8:30 a.m."

पर एक शनिवार वह उठती है तो देखती है कि उसके कमरे की लाइट पहले से जल रही है। वह हमेशा की तेज़ सफ़ेद रोशनी के बजाय हल्की नारंगी चमक पर सेट है। उलझन में वह अपने फ़ोन पर होम ऐप देखती है। वहाँ उसे एक नया ऑटोमेशन मिलता है जो उसने कभी बनाया ही नहीं: "धीरे से जगाएँ — सप्ताहांत, सुबह 8:30 बजे"

She mentions it at breakfast. "Did anyone set up a new light schedule for my room?"

नाश्ते पर वह इसका ज़िक्र करती है। "क्या किसी ने मेरे कमरे की लाइट का नया शेड्यूल सेट किया है?"

Her dad shakes his head, and her mom looks equally puzzled. "Maybe the system learned it from something," her mom suggests. "It's supposed to notice patterns over time."

Curious, Bea opens the app's history log, something she's never bothered checking before. Scrolling back, she notices a pattern. She's been waking up and using her phone at almost exactly 8:30 every Saturday for two months. She's always turned on her lamp manually first. The system had simply noticed the pattern and decided to help.

जिज्ञासा से बी ऐप का हिस्ट्री लॉग खोलती है, जिसे उसने पहले कभी देखने की ज़हमत नहीं उठाई थी। पीछे स्क्रॉल करते हुए उसे एक पैटर्न दिखता है। वह दो महीने से हर शनिवार लगभग ठीक 8:30 पर उठकर फ़ोन इस्तेमाल करती रही है। और हर बार वह पहले अपना लैंप खुद जलाती थी। सिस्टम ने बस यह पैटर्न देख लिया था और मदद करने का फ़ैसला कर लिया था।

It's a strange feeling. A piece of software has been quietly watching her habits, closely enough to predict them. Part of her finds it a little unsettling. But another part is oddly touched that something noticed she liked a gentler start to the weekend.

यह एक अजीब एहसास है। एक सॉफ़्टवेयर चुपचाप उसकी आदतों को इतने करीब से देखता रहा है कि उन्हें पहले से भाँप ले। उसका एक हिस्सा इसे थोड़ा बेचैन करने वाला पाता है। पर दूसरा हिस्सा अजीब तरह से भावुक हो जाता है कि किसी ने यह ध्यान दिया कि उसे हफ़्ते के अंत की शुरुआत नरमी से पसंद है।

She scrolls further and spots something else: an automation labeled "Study focus — weekday evenings." It was clearly built from her own habit of dimming the lights and playing quiet music before homework. She hadn't even realized that pattern was so consistent.

That evening, instead of turning it off, Bea decides to leave both automations running. The house seems to understand her better than she understands herself. She figures she might as well let it help.
