Fables: The Wolf and the Kid, The Tortoise and the Ducks, The Young Crab and His Mother, The Frogs and the Ox

There was once a little Kid whose growing horns made him think he was a grown-up Billy Goat and able to take care of himself. So one evening when the flock started home from the pasture and his mother called, the Kid paid no heed and kept right on nibbling the tender grass. A little later when he lifted his head, the flock was gone.

एक बार एक छोटा बकरी का बच्चा था जिसके बढ़ते सींगों ने उसे यह सोचने पर मजबूर कर दिया कि वह अब बड़ा हो चुका है और अपनी देखभाल खुद कर सकता है। इसलिए एक शाम जब झुंड चरागाह से घर लौटने लगा और उसकी माँ ने उसे पुकारा, तो बच्चे ने कोई ध्यान नहीं दिया और कोमल घास चरता रहा। थोड़ी देर बाद जब उसने सिर उठाया, तो झुंड जा चुका था।

He was all alone. The sun was sinking. Long shadows came creeping over the ground. A chilly little wind came creeping with them making scary noises in the grass. The Kid shivered as he thought of the terrible Wolf. Then he started wildly over the field, bleating for his mother. But not half-way, near a clump of trees, there was the Wolf!

वह बिल्कुल अकेला था। सूरज डूब रहा था। लंबी परछाइयाँ धीरे-धीरे भूमि पर फैलने लगीं। उनके साथ एक ठंडी हवा भी रेंगती हुई आई, जो घास में डरावनी आवाज़ें कर रही थी। बकरी का बच्चा भयानक भेड़िये के बारे में सोचकर काँप उठा। फिर वह पागलों की तरह मैदान में दौड़ने लगा, अपनी माँ के लिए मिमियाते हुए। पर आधे रास्ते भी नहीं पहुँचा था कि पेड़ों के एक झुरमुट के पास, वहाँ भेड़िया खड़ा था!

The Kid knew there was little hope for him.

बकरी के बच्चे को पता चल गया कि उसके लिए बहुत कम आशा बची है।

"Please, Mr. Wolf," he said trembling, "I know you are going to eat me. But first please pipe me a tune, for I want to dance and be merry as long as I can."

"कृपया, श्रीमान भेड़िया," उसने काँपते हुए कहा, "मुझे पता है कि आप मुझे खाने वाले हैं। पर पहले कृपया मेरे लिए एक धुन बजा दीजिए, क्योंकि मैं जब तक हो सके नाचना और आनंद मनाना चाहता हूँ।"

The Wolf liked the idea of a little music before eating, so he struck up a merry tune and the Kid leaped and frisked gaily.

भेड़िये को खाने से पहले थोड़ा संगीत सुनने का विचार पसंद आया, इसलिए उसने एक मधुर धुन बजानी शुरू कर दी और बकरी का बच्चा खुशी से उछलने-कूदने लगा।

Meanwhile, the flock was moving slowly homeward. In the still evening air the Wolf's piping carried far. The Shepherd Dogs pricked up their ears. They recognized the song the Wolf sings before a feast, and in a moment they were racing back to the pasture. The Wolf's song ended suddenly, and as he ran, with the Dogs at his heels, he called himself a fool for turning piper to please a Kid, when he should have stuck to his butcher's trade.

इसी बीच, झुंड धीरे-धीरे घर की ओर बढ़ रहा था। शांत शाम की हवा में भेड़िये की धुन दूर तक फैल गई। चरवाहे के कुत्तों के कान खड़े हो गए। उन्होंने पहचान लिया कि यह वही धुन है जो भेड़िया दावत से पहले बजाता है, और अगले ही पल वे भागते हुए चरागाह की ओर वापस दौड़ पड़े। भेड़िये की धुन अचानक थम गई, और जब वह भागा, कुत्ते उसके पीछे-पीछे, तो उसने खुद को मूर्ख कहा कि एक बकरी के बच्चे को खुश करने के लिए वादक बन बैठा, जबकि उसे अपने कसाई के पेशे पर ही टिके रहना चाहिए था।

THE TORTOISE AND THE DUCKS

कछुआ और बत्तखें

The Tortoise, you know, carries his house on his back. No matter how hard he tries, he cannot leave home. They say that Jupiter punished him so, because he was such a lazy stay-at-home that he would not go to Jupiter's wedding, even when especially invited.

कछुआ, जैसा कि आप जानते हैं, अपना घर अपनी पीठ पर लेकर चलता है। चाहे वह कितनी भी कोशिश करे, वह घर नहीं छोड़ सकता। कहते हैं कि जुपिटर ने उसे इस तरह दंडित किया, क्योंकि वह इतना आलसी और घर में ही टिका रहने वाला था कि विशेष निमंत्रण मिलने पर भी जुपिटर के विवाह में नहीं गया।

After many years, Tortoise began to wish he had gone to that wedding. When he saw how gaily the birds flew about and how the Hare and the Chipmunk and all the other animals ran nimbly by, always eager to see everything there was to be seen, the Tortoise felt very sad and discontented. He wanted to see the world too, and there he was with a house on his back and little short legs that could hardly drag him along.

कई वर्षों बाद, कछुआ यह चाहने लगा कि काश वह उस विवाह में गया होता। जब उसने देखा कि पक्षी कितनी खुशी से उड़ते फिरते हैं और खरगोश तथा गिलहरी और अन्य सभी जानवर कैसे फुर्ती से दौड़ते हैं, हमेशा हर चीज़ देखने को उत्सुक, तो कछुआ बहुत उदास और असंतुष्ट हो गया। वह भी दुनिया देखना चाहता था, पर उसके पास तो पीठ पर घर था और छोटी-छोटी टाँगें जो उसे मुश्किल से खींच पाती थीं।

One day he met a pair of Ducks and told them all his trouble.

एक दिन उसकी मुलाकात बत्तखों की एक जोड़ी से हुई और उसने उन्हें अपनी सारी परेशानी बताई।

"We can help you to see the world," said the Ducks. "Take hold of this stick with your teeth and we will carry you far up in the air where you can see the whole countryside. But keep quiet or you will be sorry."

"हम तुम्हें दुनिया देखने में मदद कर सकती हैं," बत्तखों ने कहा। "इस डंडे को अपने दाँतों से पकड़ लो, हम तुम्हें ऊँचे आकाश में ले जाएँगी जहाँ से तुम पूरा देश देख सकोगे। पर चुप रहना नहीं तो पछताओगे।"

The Tortoise was very glad indeed. He seized the stick firmly with his teeth, the two Ducks took hold of it one at each end, and away they sailed up toward the clouds.

कछुआ वाकई बहुत खुश हुआ। उसने डंडे को अपने दाँतों से मज़बूती से पकड़ लिया, दोनों बत्तखों ने उसे एक-एक सिरे से पकड़ लिया, और वे बादलों की ओर उड़ चले।

Just then a Crow flew by. He was very much astonished at the strange sight and cried:

तभी वहाँ से एक कौआ उड़ता हुआ गुज़रा। वह इस अजीब दृश्य को देखकर बहुत हैरान हुआ और चिल्लाया,

"This must surely be the King of Tortoises!"

"यह तो अवश्य ही कछुओं का राजा होगा!"

"Why certainly—" began the Tortoise.

"क्यों नहीं—" कछुए ने कहना शुरू किया।

But as he opened his mouth to say these foolish words he lost his hold on the stick, and down he fell to the ground, where he was dashed to pieces on a rock.

पर जैसे ही उसने ये मूर्खतापूर्ण शब्द कहने के लिए मुँह खोला, उसकी पकड़ डंडे से छूट गई, और वह नीचे भूमि पर जा गिरा, जहाँ वह एक चट्टान पर टकराकर चकनाचूर हो गया।

THE YOUNG CRAB AND HIS MOTHER

"Why in the world do you walk sideways like that?" said a Mother Crab to her son. "You should always walk straight forward with your toes turned out."

"तुम इस तरह टेढ़े-मेढ़े क्यों चलते हो?" एक माँ केकड़े ने अपने बेटे से कहा। "तुम्हें हमेशा सीधे आगे की ओर चलना चाहिए, अपने पंजे बाहर की ओर करके।"

"Show me how to walk, mother dear," answered the little Crab obediently, "I want to learn."

"मुझे दिखाइए कैसे चलना है, प्यारी माँ," छोटे केकड़े ने आज्ञाकारी भाव से उत्तर दिया, "मैं सीखना चाहता हूँ।"

So the old Crab tried and _tried_ to walk straight forward. But she could walk sideways only, like her son. And when she wanted to turn her toes out she tripped and fell on her nose.

तो बूढ़ी केकड़ी ने सीधे आगे चलने की भरपूर _कोशिश_ की। पर वह सिर्फ टेढ़े-मेढ़े ही चल पाई, अपने बेटे की तरह। और जब उसने अपने पंजे बाहर की ओर करने की कोशिश की, तो वह लड़खड़ाकर अपनी नाक के बल गिर पड़ी।

THE FROGS AND THE OX

मेंढक और बैल

An Ox came down to a reedy pool to drink. As he splashed heavily into the water, he crushed a young Frog into the mud. The old Frog soon missed the little one and asked his brothers and sisters what had become of him.

एक बैल पानी पीने के लिए एक सरकंडों भरे तालाब पर आया। जब वह ज़ोर से पानी में छपाक से गिरा, तो उसने एक छोटे मेंढक को कीचड़ में कुचल दिया। बूढ़ी मेंढकी ने जल्द ही अपने छोटे बच्चे को न पाकर अपने भाई-बहनों से पूछा कि उसका क्या हुआ।

"A _great big_ monster," said one of them, "stepped on little brother with one of his huge feet!"

"एक _बहुत बड़ा_ राक्षस," उनमें से एक ने कहा, "अपने विशाल पैरों में से एक से छोटे भाई पर पैर रख गया!"

"Big, was he!" said the old Frog, puffing herself up. "Was he as big as this?"

"Oh, _much_ bigger!" they cried.

The Frog puffed up still more.

"He could not have been bigger than this," she said. But the little Frogs all declared that the monster was _much, much_ bigger and the old Frog kept puffing herself out more and more until, all at once, she burst.

"वह इससे बड़ा नहीं हो सकता था," उसने कहा। पर छोटे मेंढकों ने ज़ोर देकर कहा कि राक्षस _बहुत, बहुत_ बड़ा था और बूढ़ी मेंढकी खुद को अधिक से अधिक फुलाती गई जब तक कि, अचानक, वह फट गई।
