Colette found the drafts folder by accident, looking for a scanned document Anton had promised to forward her weeks ago and clearly hadn't. Twenty-two years of marriage had not prepared her for what an old email account could still be hiding. This one, evidently untouched since he'd switched providers sometime before their wedding, held eleven messages that had never been sent. All were addressed to her, all dated within the same restless month the spring before he proposed.
She read the first one standing at the kitchen counter, coat still on. I don't know if I can do this the way she deserves, it began. It continued for three paragraphs Anton had apparently written, then stopped — for reasons the folder itself couldn't explain, he had decided not to send it.
Had he sent even one of them, their history might have unfolded differently — she understood that much, standing there rereading it. It might have meant a harder conversation years earlier, a different outcome altogether, or, just as easily, the same outcome reached by a more honest road. He hadn't sent it. He had married her four months later, and had not, in the twenty-two years since, given her any reason to suspect that spring had contained a version of him quietly rehearsing an exit. Not once had she imagined that season as anything but certain on his side.
What unsettled her was not the doubt itself. She had entertained doubts of her own that same spring, she remembered now, standing in this exact kitchen, though she had never once written them down for him to find. It was the sheer volume of it: eleven separate attempts, each one carefully worded, each one abandoned. It was as though he had needed to write his way through the uncertainty in private before arriving, on his own, at the version of himself ready to ask her to marry him.
She didn't confront him that evening. She waited three days, turning the drafts over in her mind the way she might have turned over a stone found on a beach, unsure whether it was worth keeping or simply worth having noticed. On the fourth, she showed him, not as an accusation but as a question she genuinely didn't know the answer to.
He read them slowly, at the same counter, and didn't try to explain them away. "I was terrified," he said finally. "Not of you. Of getting it wrong and dragging you down with me if I did."
"You never told me."
«Nunca me lo dijiste».
"Telling you felt like making it true. Not telling you felt like a choice I got to keep making, every day, until it stopped being true on its own."
It was not the answer of a man who had never doubted her. Colette understood, holding it, that she had never actually wanted that particular kind of certainty from anyone. She wanted, now, only the honesty he was finally offering — twenty-two years later than it might have been easiest to give.
