Graham had been sorting his late wife's belongings into boxes for months, one shelf at a time, whenever he could manage it. The donation box for the community center was nearly full when he found the photograph tucked inside an old cookbook. It showed himself and Eleanor, decades younger, laughing at something outside the frame.
He almost kept it back. Instead, feeling that Eleanor herself would have found the gesture a little dramatic, he let it stay. He carried the whole box to the center that Saturday.
The volunteer behind the counter turned out to be a woman named Solveig, who ran the donation intake most weekends. She lifted the cookbook out first, and the photograph slipped free onto the table between them.
"Oh," she said, picking it up carefully. "You two look happy."
«Ay», dijo ella, recogiéndola con cuidado. «Se ven felices los dos».
"We were," Graham said, and found, to his own surprise, that he could say it without his voice catching. "She passed away last spring. I'm still learning what to do with everything she left behind."
Solveig didn't offer the usual careful sympathy people had been giving him for months. She simply nodded and said that sorting through someone's things was its own kind of grief, slower than the funeral but just as real.
They talked for twenty minutes longer than the donation should have taken. Graham left with the photograph after all, having decided at the last moment that he wanted to keep it. Solveig suggested he come back the following Saturday to help sort the shelves.
He almost didn't go. Eleanor had been gone less than a year, and some part of him worried that wanting company again meant he hadn't loved her enough. But he must have known that grief and loneliness were not the same thing. By Friday evening, he had already decided what he would wear.
Solveig was there when he arrived, sorting old records into crates. She looked up and smiled, as if she, too, had wondered whether he would come.
Neither of them called it anything yet. But Graham found, folding cardboard boxes beside her, that he was glad to have somewhere to be on a Saturday again.
