The Canoe at Dusk

Isla had wanted to paddle out to the island one more time before camp ended. Colm had agreed almost too easily, the way he agreed to most things she suggested. Neither of them had checked how quickly the light faded once the sun dropped behind the ridge.

Isla había querido remar hasta la isla una vez más antes de que terminara el campamento. Colm había aceptado casi demasiado fácil, como aceptaba casi todo lo que ella proponía. Ninguno de los dos había notado qué tan rápido se iba la luz una vez que el sol caía detrás de la cresta.

"We should've turned back twenty minutes ago," Colm said, squinting at the shoreline, which had become a dark smudge against darker water. "I can barely tell where the dock is anymore."

"I know. I got us into this," Isla admitted. "If I'd checked the time before we left, we wouldn't be out here now."

«Lo sé. Yo nos metí en esto», admitió Isla. «Si hubiera revisado la hora antes de salir, no estaríamos aquí afuera ahora».

A gust caught the canoe broadside, and for a moment it tipped further than either of them liked. Colm leaned hard the other way, and the boat settled, though his heart was pounding.

Una racha de viento golpeó la canoa de costado, y por un momento se inclinó más de lo que a cualquiera de los dos le gustaba. Colm se inclinó fuerte hacia el otro lado, y la canoa se estabilizó, aunque el corazón le latía con fuerza.

"Sit low, and let's paddle together, not against each other," Isla said, forcing calm into her voice that she didn't entirely feel. "One, two, one, two — match my count."

«Siéntate bajo, y rememos juntos, no cada uno por su lado», dijo Isla, forzando en su voz una calma que no sentía del todo. «Uno, dos, uno, dos… sigue mi cuenta».

They fell into rhythm, the canoe cutting straighter through the chop than it had when each of them paddled at their own pace. The wind was pushing them slightly off course, toward the rocky south end of the lake instead of the dock.

Encontraron el ritmo, y la canoa cortaba el agua agitada más derecho que cuando cada uno remaba a su propio paso. El viento los estaba empujando un poco fuera de curso, hacia el extremo rocoso del sur del lago en vez de hacia el muelle.

"We're drifting," Colm said. "Should we correct now or wait until we're closer?"

«Nos estamos desviando», dijo Colm. «¿Corregimos ahora o esperamos a estar más cerca?».

"Now. If we wait, we'll be fighting the wind and the rocks both," Isla said, angling her paddle to steer them back on line.

«Ahora. Si esperamos, vamos a estar peleando contra el viento y las rocas a la vez», dijo Isla, angulando su remo para volver a encaminarlos.

They paddled in silence after that, both of them focused entirely on the count and the rhythm. Far ahead, the dock light flickered on, switched on by someone back at camp.

Después de eso remaron en silencio, ambos concentrados por completo en la cuenta y el ritmo. A lo lejos, la luz del muelle titiló al encenderse, prendida por alguien allá en el campamento.

By the time the bow scraped against the dock's floating edge, neither of them spoke for a moment, just breathing hard in the sudden stillness.

Para cuando la proa raspó contra el borde flotante del muelle, ninguno de los dos habló por un momento, solo respiraban con fuerza en la repentina quietud.

"Never again without checking the time," Colm said eventually, managing a shaky laugh.

"Never again," Isla agreed, though she was already, quietly, thinking about how good it had felt to get them both back safely.

«Nunca más», concordó Isla, aunque ya estaba, en silencio, pensando en lo bien que se había sentido lograr que los dos volvieran a salvo.
