Lena's book club always used secondhand copies, ordered in bulk from the same shop downtown to save money. So she thought nothing of the pencil notes already scattered through the margins of her latest book. Other readers' comments were normal enough. What was strange was how accurate they were.
Three pages before a major twist, a small note in the margin read: "Watch what happens to the letter." Lena hadn't reached that part of the discussion with anyone yet, and the book club hadn't met to discuss it either. Further in, another note appeared exactly where a minor character's name changed meaning entirely. It flagged the twist a full chapter before most readers would notice.
By the time she reached the final chapters, Lena had started half-joking to her husband. Maybe her copy was haunted, or someone from the club had somehow read her mind. She brought the book to the next meeting and passed it around. Several other members admitted, a little sheepishly, that their copies had similar notes, written in the same careful pencil hand.
Someone finally asked the bookshop owner about it the following week, expecting a strange story. Instead, the explanation turned out to be pleasantly simple. The club always bought a particular publisher's edition in bulk because it was cheapest. Most of those secondhand copies had originally come from the same donated collection. Years earlier, it had been sold off by a reader named Soren, who had annotated nearly everything he owned before moving abroad.
His notes had simply been circulating through the club for years, distributed randomly whenever a new batch of books arrived. Occasionally, they landed in the hands of a reader who noticed how sharp his observations were. Nobody in the club had ever met him, and the bookshop owner admitted she didn't even have a current address for him anymore.
Lena kept the book afterward instead of returning it to the shop's used pile. A stranger's careful reading, even one she would never get to thank in person, deserved a permanent home on her own shelf.
