Andile and two friends rented a mountain cabin for the weekend. They brought food for two days. On Saturday night, the snow began.
Andile e dois amigos alugaram uma cabana na montanha para o fim de semana. Levaram comida para dois dias. No sábado à noite, a neve começou.
By Sunday morning, the snow was up to the windows. The road was closed. Nobody could leave.
Na manhã de domingo, a neve chegava às janelas. A estrada estava fechada. Ninguém podia ir embora.
"We must stay one more day," said one friend. "How much food do we have?"
"Precisamos ficar mais um dia", disse um dos amigos. "Quanta comida a gente tem?"
They put everything on the kitchen table. There was half a bag of rice. They had three cans of beans and four eggs. They also had two onions and a few carrots.
Eles puseram tudo na mesa da cozinha. Havia meio pacote de arroz. Tinham três latas de feijão e quatro ovos. Também tinham duas cebolas e algumas cenouras.
"It is not much," Andile said. "But it is enough."
"Não é muito", disse Andile. "Mas é suficiente."
They played cards all afternoon. The loser had to wash the dishes. Andile lost four times.
Jogaram cartas a tarde toda. Quem perdia tinha de lavar a louça. Andile perdeu quatro vezes.
In the evening, they made soup. Andile cut the onions and the carrots. They added the rice and the beans. The soup was hot and thick. The wood stove kept the room warm. Outside, the wind was loud.
À noite, fizeram sopa. Andile cortou as cebolas e as cenouras. Acrescentaram o arroz e o feijão. A sopa estava quente e grossa. O fogão a lenha mantinha a sala aquecida. Lá fora, o vento rugia.
They ate two bowls each. It was the best soup of the whole year. Then they went to bed early.
Cada um comeu dois pratos. Foi a melhor sopa do ano inteiro. Depois foram dormir cedo.
On Monday morning, they heard a big engine. A farmer came down the road on a tractor. It had a wide blade. He pushed the snow to the side. Then he waved at the cabin.
Na segunda de manhã, ouviram um motor grande. Um fazendeiro vinha pela estrada num trator. Ele tinha uma lâmina larga. Empurrou a neve para o lado. Depois acenou para a cabana.
Andile ran outside in his socks. He had a cup of hot soup in his hand. The farmer smiled and took it.
Andile saiu correndo de meias. Tinha na mão uma xícara de sopa quente. O fazendeiro sorriu e a pegou.
